Boards of Canada - Telephasic Workshop

Boards of Canada are arguably

Boards of Canada performing (Image Source)
one of the most influential electronic groups of the last few decades, with a sound that inspired artists across really all genres, from groups like Radiohead to metal bands. The group got together in 1986, initially as a sort of collective of friends writing together (called the Hexagon Sun), with the duo of brothers Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin becoming the actual Boards of Canada project in the '90s. They created a sound that incorporated a lot of vintage synths, samples and hip hop beats that became their signature, widely imitated by many others though never as well as the duo did it. There is something about their sound that immediately invokes nostalgia, a sort of dreamy sort quality that I find is always appealing, and in my list of great 'driving around' music. Today's song is from their 1998 classic Music Has the Right to Children, which is filled with amazing tunes from start to finish. You can't really go wrong with this album, it somehow manages to fit many different moods and is a great listen anytime.

I love BoC, but with so much new music now on Soundcloud, Spotify and YouTube its easy to forget older sounds. Thanks for reminding me!

They are a huge influence and so innovative in their methods too. I read that they use a lot of old analogue gear and no computers at all, which is quite something!

I'm not certain they would be completely computerless if they are still producing these days (haven't seen any news) but Warp Records stuff of that era was heavily based on live and studio electronic instruments for sure. Its been a big influence for leftfield artists over the years. BOC certainly managed to poke their heads above the surface influencing the likes of Daft Punk and Moby, Radiohead etc. Not to mention the much adored Aphex Twin also of Warp lineage ...

Aphex Twin is definitely in their league of genius artists, have always loved his work.

Yep. They also used a lot of cheapy sort of things, old little Casio keyboards and whatnot.

Circuit breaking is something else they’d do but the strangest thing is, their first album came out in 1998, they sound more recent than that and I think the music they created will never age!
