Bass Finger Cam for "25 or 6 To 4" and "Beginings" May 04 2025
These are the last two songs of the performance.
First is, "25 or 6 to 4".
Yeah, that's that name.
I remember liking this song alot when I was younger. It was rare to hear on the radio. Why would they play "Aqua Lung" more?
Anyway... it's really that fun to play. The part is specific, so I think elements to focus on are dynamic contrast and groove.
The main riff/part can get old real real fast if the tempo drags or if it's not hypnotic.
Notice in the video I try to use the back part of the string and my right hand goes out of frame.
This is to achive a twangy and tight sound. It sounds cool.
The dudes from the 70's loved it and I love them.
My finger tips hate us all when I play on the back too long. I'm glad it's one of the last songs. I'm glad this bass has been made easy to play.
WTF kind of song name is that? I can't remember why this Chicago song is called "25 or 6 to 4"
Wait! Before you look it up, leave a comment with your best guess.
Please!!! Com'on!?
I was going to guess first, but I can only think of dirt jokes at the moment.
So, you go first.
By the way, the name of this band is Jazz Derelicts. They/we are for hire and accept crypto. :)
Anyway, they like to end with a song called "Begininings".
I think that functionally that's a good choice. The songs has a long note for the ending and it get more and more epic as the song ends.
This creates an opportunity for a long grandiose fermata ending that ever last song needs.
Thanks for supporting, reading and watching.

It's a cool song, but playing the same riff over and over can wear you down. The chorus must feel like a nice break. I have a couple of guitar gigs coming up, so I need to work those muscles as I've been mostly drumming lately.
I've got no idea what that title means :)
Yeah, I know what you mean. Bass is supposed to be hypnotic, but in situations like this I try to communicate the different sections to the other players with dynamic contrast. So if the base part is the same, the whole time through, I get super quiet when the Singer comes in. If it doesn’t sound too awkward, I play the same riff on a different octave.
And then, if that doesn’t work, I press a magic button and my guitar pick ups turn into bottle rockets/Roman candles. 😁
Hey neighbor, I thought of something else. If everybody’s hammering away on the same riff, you can play less. Nobody will notice or care. As long as the groove and rhythm is solid, you can play hardly anything in the beginning, and then play the full riff after the middle of the song.
It sounds good this way. Layering, giving the other instrument space in the beginning. You know how we all tend to be, blowing our load too early in the solo, playing all of our best licks during the first 24 measures of the song and having nothing later. Wait, what are we talking about?
Oh yeah, play less in the beginning and it sounds groovy.
