Hace poco me encontré con una canción de Tatsuro Yamashita y desde que la escuché se me quedó pegada en la cabeza como un gusanito dando vueltas sin parar. Tiene algo esa música, como si fuera suave y vieja pero al mismo tiempo súper viva, no sé, me atrapó. Es de esas canciones que no necesitas entender del todo, solo sentir. No conocía mucho de él, pero leyendo un poco vi que es una leyenda del city pop japonés, y entiendo por qué. Tiene esa magia que te engancha sin darte cuenta, como una especie de nostalgia alegre que no sabías que necesitabas.

Y bueno, apenas la escuché supe que tenía que hacer algo. Me dieron ganas de meterme ahí, de jugar con esa energía. Agarré el cuatro que tenía por ahí, me senté sin mucho plan, solo con la idea de grabar algo, lo que saliera. Al principio era algo sencillo, pero luego me animé a meterle efectos, capas, probé otras formas de interpretarla. Cambié el ritmo un poco, los acentos, incluso la intención. Y al final salió algo bastante diferente de las versiones que hay por ahí. No diría que mejor ni peor, pero sí con mi sello.

Me gusta eso de reinterpretar, no copiar. Como tomar una canción prestada y vestirla con tu ropa, ponerle tu acento, tu historia, tu forma de sentirla. Así lo viví. Y aunque no es perfecta, tiene alma, y eso para mí vale más que sonar bonito. Ojalá les guste esta entrada. La hice con cariño, sin apuro, con el corazón puesto en cada nota. Como cuando algo se mete en la cabeza y no te deja en paz hasta que lo sacás cantando.

A few days ago, I came across a song by Tatsuro Yamashita, and ever since I heard it, it’s been stuck in my head like a little dusty worm spinning around nonstop. There’s just something about that music—it feels soft and vintage, but at the same time, so alive. I don’t know, it grabbed me instantly. It’s one of those songs you don’t need to fully understand—you just feel it. I didn’t know much about him before, but after reading a bit I found out he’s a legend of Japanese city pop, and now I totally get it. His music has that magic that pulls you in, like a joyful nostalgia you didn’t know you needed.

And well, as soon as I heard it, I felt like I had to do something with it. I got that itch to create. So I picked up my cuatro, sat down without much of a plan, and just started recording whatever came out. It began as something really simple, but then I started adding effects, layers, trying different ways of playing. I changed the rhythm a bit, the feel, even the energy. In the end, it turned out pretty different from the original versions out there. Not better or worse, just with my own vibe.

I love that feeling—taking a song and reinterpreting it, not just copying it. It’s like borrowing a song and dressing it up in your own clothes, giving it your accent, your story, your way of feeling it. That’s how it felt for me. And even if it’s not perfect, it has soul, and to me, that matters more than a clean mix.
