Hive Music Festival 182 Round 2 ''Gorillaz - Tarantula'' Chrono Trigger Samples Experimental Tape Noise ENG/SPA

For this round of the Hive Music Festival, I decided to push the boundaries of "the cover" by blending two worlds that, on the surface, seem entirely different, yet share a deep sense of atmospheric melancholy: the legendary SNES RPG Chrono Trigger and the track "Tarantula" by Gorillaz (from the Cracker Island era).

My goal was to create a "deconstructed" version of Tarantula. Instead of just re-playing the melody, I wanted to re-contextualize the song through the lens of 16-bit nostalgia. Chrono Trigger is famous for its emotive soundtracks—songs like "Wind Scene" or "Schala’s Theme" have a crystalline, timeless quality. By pulling samples directly from the game’s sound font, I was able to wrap the funky, synth-pop structure of Gorillaz in a layer of noise, retro-fantasy textures.

Original Song:

The "Experimental" part of this cover comes from my use of Tape Noise and analog degradation. I wanted the track to sound like a lost cassette tape found in a dusty attic from 1995. I used various saturation plugins and real tape loops to introduce hiss, wow, and flutter. This grit acts as the glue between the clean digital samples of the SNES era and the vocal melodies of Tarantula.

The percussion was replaced with lo-fi hits, and I used the iconic "Secret of the Forest" echo style to give the arrangement more space. The result is a haunting, rhythmic journey where the upbeat energy of Gorillaz meets the bittersweet longing of a time-traveling adventure.

Exploring this entry allowed me to experiment with sound design as much as musical arrangement. Combining the genius of Damon Albarn with the legendary compositions of Yasunori Mitsuda felt like a tribute to two of my biggest influences. I hope you enjoy this trip through time and sound!

Para esta ronda del Hive Music Festival, decidí desafiar los límites de lo que significa hacer un "cover", fusionando dos mundos que, a simple vista, parecen totalmente opuestos, pero que comparten una profunda melancolía atmosférica: el legendario RPG de la Super Nintendo, Chrono Trigger, y el tema "Tarantula" de Gorillaz (de la era de Cracker Island).

El Concepto

Mi objetivo fue crear una versión "deconstruida" de Tarantula. En lugar de simplemente replicar la melodía original, quise recontextualizar la canción a través del lente de la nostalgia de los 16 bits. La banda sonora de Chrono Trigger es famosa por su carga emotiva; temas como "Wind Scene" o "Schala’s Theme" poseen una cualidad cristalina y eterna. Al extraer samples directamente de la fuente de sonido del juego, logré envolver la estructura synth-pop de Gorillaz en una capa de texturas etéreas de fantasía retro.

Ejecución Técnica y Ruido de Cinta Experimental

La parte "experimental" de este cover surge de mi uso del Tape Noise (ruido de cinta) y la degradación analógica. Quería que la pista sonara como un casete perdido encontrado en un ático polvoriento desde 1995. Utilicé varios plugins de saturación y loops de cinta reales para introducir siseos y variaciones de tono (wow y flutter). Esta suciedad funciona como el pegamento entre los samples digitales limpios de la era de la SNES y las melodías vocales de Tarantula.

La percusión fue sustituida por golpes lo-fi, y utilicé el icónico estilo de eco de "Secret of the Forest" para darle más espacio al arreglo. El resultado es un viaje rítmico y evocador donde la energía de Gorillaz se encuentra con la nostalgia agridulce de una aventura a través del tiempo.

Reflexiones Finales

Explorar esta entrada para el festival me permitió experimentar tanto con el diseño de sonido como con el arreglo musical. Combinar el genio de Damon Albarn con las legendarias composiciones de Yasunori Mitsuda fue mi manera de rendir tributo a dos de mis mayores influencias. ¡Espero que disfruten este viaje a través del tiempo y el sonido!
