Three tune Tuesday and I got a Family Stone to dance to the music with......so take me higher please!
Introduction
@ablaze has been doing 3 tune Tuesday for quite a while and we love the idea of it and some of the posts @stickupmusic has been doing it but I thought I would join in too. it is a great way to listen to new music which is always something we want to do!
Our picks
This week we are all about Family, yes the one and only Sly and the family stone. They started in the 60's and just kept on going. I would love to have seen them live in their prime, I am sure they rocked the place down with their sext soul funk sound. I have seen live footage of them many times and Sly gave it 110% that is for sure. It is still not the same as seeing them live though. They are just so tight as a band but also have this sense of freedom about them that adds to the vibe. They just gel as a unit even when the line up changed a bit there energy and musicality are second to none. I feel I have picked the obvious choices this week, but they are so good and cannot be ignored and maybe, just maybe you forgot how good they are and this will remind you.
Song 1
Everyday people is just a classic, it has everything you want from a Sly song. Cool vocals, amazing backing vocals, brilliant horns, sweet bass and drums....I mean is this the perfect funk soul song? can you name better?
Song 2
Is this worth it just for the intro 10 seconds? It is also worth it for the harmonica solo in the middle....This song has a freedome and wildness about it. Some of it sounds like a crazy jam with some great guitars playing freely here and there. I will tell you one thins Sly and the Family Stone definitely take me higher...I think originally they were called Sly and the Stoners, which sometimes sounds like an apt name for them.
Song 3
"Dance to the Music", yes is another obvious choice but come on check the dum dum vocals...it is worth the money just for those vocals. I mean songs are "classic" for a reason and stand the test of time. So listening to this it really has stood the test of time. I love it when it just goes down to the vocals and the drums with some blues guitar in then comes in with a bassy synth I think....It is so bold and so brave in terms of its arrangement, it is nice to hear it so stripped down in this song. So come one, dance to the music now...
Bonus funk groove...
Come on so funky, I had to have this as well.....welcome to four tune Tuesday. Thank you!

Yep, agree with all of that, solid song choices. I do feel that they are almost a bit under appreciated, they were a tour de force and I agree it would have been so cool to see them live in their prime. They always looked like they were having such fun while expressing themselves creatively, they almost made it look easy, like it was not a job, but a vocation to spread the funk!
Ha ha, well worth it to get an extra bit of Sly and co, quality quality listening.
man they were inspirational, it was the freedom combined with the technical skill....pure vibe!
