Bera Dallin is with River Hellondale and the other members of the New Everitt governing council discussing their investigation into the strange occurrences that have been reported all over Praetoria: people vanishing, towns cutting off communications, ships never reaching port, and the Creeping Plague.

On the horizon, a blinding beam of blue light bursts from Mount Praetorous and shoots into the sky. Black, wriggling tentacles rise from the volcano. New Everitt is attacked by eldritch creatures.

Bera, River, and a few healthy warriors gather in the street and prepare to defend the town. Monstrous creatures land in the street and surround them. The heroes charge into battle.
