Últimos Hippies en La Habana / Last Hippies in Havana

Hola Hivers...

In my previous post I told you about my dear Uncle Juan Tomás, and today I am going to tell you about "Gigantería". That Street Theater Company of which together with him and other artists whom I consider brothers, I was a member for more than 10 years.
I hope you like it.

In 2000, a street theater group was formed in Havana. I had gone to see them several times because of a very close friend who was part of that company; Michel Hernandez (El Guajiro). They did theater and musical animation in the streets of Old Havana interacting in a very special way with the public, they had a strange and reduced "Conga" with an unusual format: Chinese Trumpet, Bass Drum, Bell, a Tumbadora and a Uruguayan Drum. But what caught my attention the most was that they did it all on stilts fluidly and managed to transmit that energy to the audience in the street with tremendous spontaneity and charisma.

An eagle passed by the sea... and one day Raulito "El Quimbo" (another of its members) came looking for me because Michel was going to Italy and they wanted me in the group. Of my various stages in "Gigantería"; I will tell you about the first one, which was the one that marked me the most. There were 12 of us among actors, actresses and musicians; the first day they dressed me, made me up, gave me a drum and off we went !!!! "El Pita", who directed the music told me -Don't worry Piño, follow us, you're going to stick fast !!!! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha-.... -When that thing started and I went to play I was already 20 meters and a few bars behind, anyway... that day I could not do anything worthwhile.

I had to put my batteries and train very hard to get used to playing and singing in unison in that moving train... that did not stop. What we did (musically) was a hybrid between the "Conga" of Havana and Santiago de Cuba, it was a rhythmic rhythm that reached the highest temperatures and brought people out of their homes and workplaces to enjoy all over the "Casco Histórico" with some stilt walkers actors "loose and unvaccinated", who really lived in the skin of their characters doing the most unbelievable crazy things.

-Jajajajajajaja-. Fue una etapa hermosa.

I remember how "El Diablo Colorao" patted the bald guys...or "threatened" to enter the Church of La Catedral every time we passed by the Plaza -Jajajajajajajajajajajaja-, seeing the "Pajarraco" (Lena) shot on stilts with a policeman's cap in her hand and the poor guy running desperate...making a fool of himself behind her without knowing what to do. "El Quimbo" on his unicycle "flying low" chased by a horde of children and Roberto "finishing with the fifth and with the handles"; like the day he broke (without meaning to) the cane of an actor who played Chaplin's Charlot the tramp.... -Jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja-. It was a beautiful stage.

We were the last hippies in Havana and we were a "rare case"; we did not belong to any of the "Artistic Representation" Companies of the Government and therefore we did not obey anyone's orders. With the direct authorization of the "Office of the Historian of the City" we used to pass the "hat" in a kind of "Pasacalle" that we did daily and with that we produced our plays that we presented every Sunday in a "Plaza de Armas" full of children. We lived together as a family, sharing everything, rehearsing and growing every day as brothers and sisters, as artists, until we became the totally Underground project that we became... against all odds.

Not having a director led us to an anarchy that worked by consensus and although the discussions were sometimes intense and exhausting... in the end we always agreed -Jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja-. With them I became an artist, I lost the terrible stage fright that had accompanied me until then, I had to act, sing and even dance in the street. My character was called "Boca e' Rumba" and although I don't feel like an actor, I had a lot of fun unfolding myself and "forming my own thing" -jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj-. Besides; it was a beautiful and unique opportunity to say for the first time in my life, out loud and in the middle of the street what I felt like "the real thing" -Jajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja- which after all was what "the thing" was all about.

I want to sincerely thank these soul brothers with whom I lived a stage of light and learning that was crucial for my spiritual, musical and artistic evolution. Although I confess that I have never been on stilts because I have never stopped being the classic anti-hero. I am a stilt walker; and I will carry the Street Theater Company "Gigantería" along with everything we lived; forever in my heart and in my memory.

And so I bid you farewell my dear Hivers; thanking you for your reading time and sending you, as always, many blessings and a warm embrace from Havana.

Quien sabe, quizás hasta te he visto actuar!
