Revisiting La La Land: I'm a fool with a dream.

This is not the first time I have talked about La La Land in this community and the reason for this is quite clear: every time I decide to watch it again I find something totally new.

Regardless of what we think of his filmography, Damien Chazelle is one of the most brilliant filmmakers that exist today, something he has demonstrated with a small catalog but characterized by an incredibly consistent level of quality, where even the most polarizing films (I'm referring to Babylon, obviously) they manage to stand well above the average to which this industry has accustomed us.

However, I believe that this man had never been so close to absolute perfection as when he directed "La La Land", a musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone that, within a love story that is touching and devastating in almost equal quantities, knows how to brilliantly capture the toxic relationship that many of us have with success, capable of sacrificing whatever is necessary to achieve it.

A couple of months ago I wrote a brief review in which I delved deeply into this aspect of the film, on that occasion, taking as a starting point the thematic similarities it had with whiplash (another Chazelle film that explored the search for success within the show business, although he approached it from a murkier angle).

I still agree with this position and for me it is one of the main reasons why it is easy to connect with La La Land, but, in my most recent viewing, I ended up emphasizing its more "optimistic" aspects, something that actually does not ignore the pain of its tragic events but rather reinterpret them from a sweeter than sour perspective.

You see, La La Land has always existed (for me) in a limbo where it worships and pays homage to the world of entertainment, but is also capable of showing its negative aspects with a cynicism that is easy to ignore thanks to its own tone. Mia, the young actress, is never presented as someone more talented than the other women around her, unless we are observing her through the eyes of Sebastián, someone who is obviously blinded by the love he feels for her.

Sebastián, on the other hand, is a man who feels a genuine passion for jazz, but at the same time is incapable of giving in when it comes to realizing his dreams, determined to fulfill them within his own terms and rejecting what the modern society has done with the culture it worships.

Although describing its protagonists in this way could make us think that La La Land is a love story between two mediocre people, ironically, these defects are what allow us to connect with them, appealing to that ambitious and childish part within us. A part who sadly dies when we grow and must settle for being something in life that we never wanted to be.

As a person who has always been obsessed with cinema, music and television, I sometimes feel that it is impossible for me to connect with someone except through the art that I love, not only as a consumer but also as a person capable to create it to a greater or lesser extent.

Every conversation held between Mía and Sebastián is built on art: the longing for the classics of the past, the possibility of enjoying what we have in the present, and why not: the ability to create more things for the future.

There's love? Yes, but it is a love strategically positioned between their passions, and they use themselves as an engine to achieve everything they want, until unfortunately the cost of those desires separates them.

While this doesn't make the ending any less depressing, it does end up recontextualizing the feelings of both protagonists when they meet again 5 years later, both flooded with the overwhelming idea of "what if...", but satisfied with the fact that the sacrifice taken mutually took them to the place they wanted.

Esta no es la primera vez que hablo de La La Land en esta comunidad y la razón de esto es bastante clara: siempre que decido volver a verla me encuentro con algo totalmente nuevo.

Independientemente de lo que pensemos de su filmografía, Damien Chazelle es uno de los cineastas más brillantes que existen en la actualidad, algo que ha demostrado con un catálogo reducido pero caracterizado por un nivel de calidad increíblemente consistente, en dónde incluso los filmes más polarizantes (Me refiero a Babylon, obviamente) logran erigirse muy por encima de la media a la cual nos tiene acostumbrados esta industria.

No obstante, creo que este hombre nunca había estado tan cerca de la perfección absoluta como cuando dirigió "La La Land", un musical protagonizado por Ryan Gosling y Emma Stone que dentro de una historia de amor enternecedora y devastadora en cantidades casi iguales, sabe plasmar brillantemente la relación tóxica que muchos tenemos con el éxito, capaces de sacrificar lo que sea necesario para alcanzarlo.

Hace un par de meses escribí una breve reseña en dónde ahondaba con profundidad en este aspecto de la película, en esa ocasión, tomando como punto de partida las similitudes temáticas que tenía con whiplash (otro filme de Chazelle que exploraba la búsqueda del exito dentro del mundo del espectáculo, aunque lo abordaba desde un angulo más turbio).

Sigo estando de acuerdo con esta postura y para mí es una de las principales razones por las cuales es fácil conectar con La La Land, pero, en mi visionado más reciente, terminé haciendo hincapié en sus aspectos más "optimistas", algo que no implica ignorar el dolor de sus eventos trágicos sino más bien reinterpretarlos desde una óptica más dulce que agria.

Verán, La la land siempre ha existido (para mí) en un limbo en dónde adora y rinde homenaje al mundo del espectáculo, pero también es capaz de mostrar sus aspectos negativos con un cinismo facil de ignorar gracias a su propio tono. Mía, la joven actriz, nunca es presentada como alguien con más talento que las demás mujeres que le rodean, a menos de que la estemos observando a través de los ojos de Sebastián, alguien que obviamente está cegado por el amor que siente por ella.

Sebastián, por otro lado, es un hombre que siente pasión genuina por el jazz, pero al mismo tiempo es incapaz de dar el brazo a torcer cuando se trata de materializar sus sueños, empecinado con cumplirlos dentro de sus propios términos y rechazando lo que la sociedad moderna ha hecho con la cultura que adora.

Si bien describir a sus protagonistas de esta manera podría darnos a entender que La La land es una historia de amor entre dos personas mediocres, irónicamente, estos defectos son los que nos permite conectar con ellos, apelando a esa parte ambiciosa e infantil que hay dentro de cada uno de nosotros que lastimosamente va muriendo a medida que crecemos y debemos conformarnos con ser en la vida algo que nunca quisimos ser.

Cómo una persona que siempre ha estado obsesionado con el cine, la música y la televisión, a veces siento que es imposible para mí conectar con alguien sino es a través de el arte que amo, no solo como un consumidor sino también como una persona capaz de crearlo en mayor o menor medida .

Cada conversación sostenida entre Mía y Sebastián se construye sobre el arte: la añoranza por los clásicos del pasado, la posibilidad de disfrutar lo wue tenemos en el presente, y por qué no: la capacidad de crear más cosas para el futuro.

¿Hay amor? Si, pero es un amor estratégicamente posicionado entre sus pasiones, y ambos se utilizan como motor para alcanzar todo lo que desean, hasta que lastimosamente el costo de esos deseos los separa.

Si bien esto no hace que el final sea menos deprimente, si termina recontextualizando los sentimientos de ambos protagonistas cuando se reencuentran 5 años después, ambos, inundados en la abrumando idea del "que hubiese pasado si...", pero satisfechos con que el sacrificio tomado mutuamente los hubiese llevado al lugar que querían.
