It is indeed an excellent question, given the history of the city in that region at that time ... the present development was at least planned by then. Hayes Street is named for Rutherford B. Hayes, who was president in 1878 ... so we know that 20 years on, something might have been going on...
Now, that is a good question ... we know from the geology of the neighborhood that it is quite likely that the house was not there and a sand dune was ... everything significantly west of me in San Francisco for four miles is ... BUT, in 1897, the plan to turn all these sand dunes into parks and development was well underway because Golden Gate Park is just a block and a half south, and we know that started in the 1880s. So, we cannot be absolutely sure nothing was happening there!
I knew you would provide the history that proved that something probably could have happened at that site. :)
