I am not sure what elements make an opening memorable. But I notice most of the legendary openings have english on it. Take Duvet from Serial Experiment Lain for example. Dan Da Dan is another one. This season one that I like is the Gals with the Otaku guy, Otaku ni Yasashii Gal wa Inai!?

In the end, it's all subjective; what makes openings memorable is people's taste, it's as simple as that.

Def popish, but that's what makes it memorable I think.
Of course that a cult opening are the animes from Nujabes, Samurai Champloo; Cowboy Beebop and Evangelion.
