There is definitely truth to this ... we just have to be careful to use the best of the past, and not assume that the bad parts determine our entire future. We also have to be careful not to compare ourselves with the good and consider ourselves failures. In other words, we have to build wisely on the past, and not assume the past is in charge. We are in charge of what we choose from the past to build our future.
