Two Oceans in between us
I was just 13 years of age when I came across a song in the movie titled "Teen wolf." It was the trending movie at that time, I don't know if it was a worldwide sensation but atleast, I'm sure it made waves over here in Nigeria.
Have you ever noticed that a song from a movie scene sounds better and more pleasing to the heart than a random song you heard while walking across the roadside, or one recommended to you by people.
Well, I had an unforgettable experience with the movie "Teen wolf", and it was all because of the song which I heard during a scene at the last episode of the finale.
"Have you heard that the final season of teen wolf is out?"
Chukwudi, my little brother, said to me. He stood right in front of me, explaining the events surrounding the release of the highly anticipated season.
"Alright, I'll buy the cassette and we'll watch it together."
We sat in the living room, turned the light off paving way for darkness. All you could see was the flickering light rays which shone right out of the television.
"I heard something bad happened in this episode."
"Chukwudi please can you keep quiet?" My brother had this obnoxious attitude of spoiling the suspense in a movie.
Well, I watched till the end and got to a particular scene where Allison, the girlfriend of the main character (Scott), or rather, should I say... "Allison the main character?" I really don't know.
But it happened she was killed at this scene. I never expected it. Anyways, no one expects death. This also shows that death is certain... even in movies.
But then, there came a point in the movie where Scott opened his locker and saw an inscription of his girlfriend's name on it. It read...
"Allison"
A song suddenly started playing in the background — it was Ava by Famy
I felt this sudden rush of emotions and it almost felt as though the movie scenario was a real life occurence. The song emphasized on the fact that there were two oceans in between them (Scott and Allison). I interpreted the "oceans" as death and it took my mind back in time, to the people that meant a lot to me: my Dad, JoJo, Isaac, chuks and so many more. Tears streamed down my eyes.
"Jesus! Don't tell me you're crying." My brother exclaimed.
"Me? Cry? Of course not! Why would I cry?"
"I'm going to tell Ijeoma." My little brother ran into the room to inform my sister that I cried because of a movie.
But what he failed to realize was the fact that I didn't cry because of the movie, but because of the emotions and memories that came with the song attached to the movie. Isn't it wonderful how a song can connect your real life experiences to a movie scenario? Music is just that powerful. I wouldn't have cried if there was no music, neither would I have reflected on my past.
Sometimes in life, to reflect on our lives, all we need is the right song and that's all. Feelings, emotions and thoughts are enhanced in the atmosphere of music — a great way to reflect!
It was never about teen wolf, it was never about Allison — it was just the music.
Till this day, when I come across this song, all I remember is the inevitability of death and the fleeting nature of life. Perhaps when we recklessly live life in oblivion of the reality that awaits us ahead, this song will slow us down...
It'll remind us that there's an ocean eagerly waiting to separate us from the world and the people we so much cherish.
This is correct 😁 Scott is the main character
At first I didn't recognize that song but I later did when it was getting to the end, I think it was also used in another scene, not just that one where Scott saw Allison's name on his locker. Well, it has been over 7 years since I watched that series, so I might be wrong
Yeah, you definitely watched it. It might have been used in another scene though, although I can't remember.
The movie was a great one though 👌
It's true, music hits differently when you can relate the lyrics to your past experiences. And sometimes this experiences once we remember them makes us cry. Your brother did not understand your tears at the time but it's just something we all did as kid... Laugh at any of our family member who couldn't hold back a tear during a scene... Lol
