My mood swings, and how it varies depending on the music I listen to
What you see on the cover of this post, is the picture I took watching Better Call Saul, one of the best series I've ever seen. To be more specific, it's a capture of the first episode. Which opens with a tremendously beautiful song "Address Unknown" by The Ink Spots; a band of African-American musicians from the late 50's and early 60's. If you ever have the opportunity to let yourself be carried away by the effect of that song, I highly recommend it....
To be honest, as a child I began to notice that certain songs, even certain artists and bands, had an effect on me. In fact, they had the power to change my mood. Especially in my teenage years, when hormonal effects further governed my capacity for emotional balance. To give a better example, I have Leslie Gore, a woman who is herself worthy of another post, but who has songs that are simply iconic and full of upbeat rhythms but somewhat dark lyrics.
A strange combination. I mean, sounds, compositions, songs that seem to be happy, lively and full of carefree, but if they are well analyzed, they contain an essence of pain, and emotions that are not entirely happy. There are also cases where this phenomenon goes in the opposite direction. That is to say, where what seems to be a tune full of introspection and pain, contains a sonorous and empty lyric. Radiohead, sacrilegious as it may seem, have several songs like this.
I consider my life to have highs and lows. As, I assume, does everyone. However, from a therapeutic point of view I have found that there is a certain catalytic power in music. Sometimes, in my states of anger, just to give an example, I use my rock side and end up in heavier genres and full of vigor; that far from awakening my anger, make me relax. The funny thing is that I don't look like a woman, who a priori, could listen to music of this style but I always do, haha.
With sadness and desolation something similar happens to me. That is, I have a playlist that is available to make me feel more deeply what ails me. Sometimes crying, being alone and even being carried away by the effect of the music under a certain emotion makes everything have more essence. I have learned that just as moods are temporary, the orgasmic sensation (in the senses, not sexually... Although depending on the context, haha) makes a huge difference; it transforms everything.
Music is among the most precious things I've ever had the opportunity to experience in my life. And no, I don't care at all if it sounds cliché or overdone. If a beautiful set of sounds can provoke so much in me, in one person: from my perspective it is too worth giving it recognition. Today is Sunday, I wasn't planning to write, but it all started with the leisure of watching a series, and then the fabulous The Ink Spots changed everything; for the better, evidently.
I'll leave some of the songs I've mentioned here, and I sincerely hope everyone can listen to them. It's beautiful to learn from the experiences others have and feel. Just as sharing our stories through blogging makes us closer, being total strangers, music is our tool, our conduit to connection in this community, in our lives and I would even say, in our senses. Thank you all for reading me, you are all beautiful.
