Choose the Right Equipment

Now that you have a budget in mind, it's time to start shopping for equipment. Here are some items you'll need to consider:

1. Studio Computer: This will be the hub of your home studio, so you'll want to make sure you have a powerful and reliable machine. If you're on a tight budget, you can get away with a mid-range laptop or desktop. Just make sure it has enough processing power and storage to run your recording software and plugins. And if you're not much of a tech person, no problem! There are plenty of user-friendly options out there that are great for beginners.

We are Mac folks here at BlockTunes, and suggest the Macbook Air M1 or M2 laptops for those that want to be more mobile. If you want a desktop, the new iMac is pretty freaking amazing for the price you pay. Plus they come with Garageband, so you already have software to get started.

If you want to go the Windows route, you will want to make sure it has at least 8GB of RAM and a decent quad-core processor. Here are some suggestions from Amazon. You do not get any software with windows so you will have that extra expense as well. That leads us into the next item...

2. Digital Audio Workstation (DAW): This is the software you'll use to record, edit, and mix your audio. There are plenty of options out there, ranging from free programs like Audacity to more expensive options like Pro Tools. It all comes down to personal preference and what works best for your needs.

Here at BlockTunes, we use Logic Pro X as our primary DAW. This is only available on Mac and is the upgrade to Garageband. Our in-house engineer, @groove-logic, is an Apple-certified trainer and engineer on this software. When you compare with the cost of other software alone, at $199 Logic Pro X is a steal. So pretty much you can get your whole studio setup including your Mac and LPX, with studio equipment for less than the cost of Pro Tools Ultimate (and it all does the same stuff).

3. Studio Microphone: You'll need a good quality microphone to capture your vocals or instrumentals. There are many types of microphones to choose from, so do your research and see which one will best suit your needs. Don't skimp on this one - a bad microphone can ruin even the best recording. For studio recording, you need to have a condenser microphone, not a dynamic mic. Dynamic mics are used on stage. We are a fan of Shure microphones and Rode microphones. This may be one of the more costly parts of your setup, especially if you are a vocal artist.

4. Audio Interface: This is a device that connects your microphone or any external instruments to your computer and allows you to record high-quality audio. There are many options out there, so again, do your research and find one that fits your budget and needs. In many cases you can find really good deals on bundles that come with the audio interface, software, headphones, and a starter mic setup that could get you buy until you can at least upgrade the mic and headphones. We are big fans of the Presonus Audio Box as a budget interface. It also comes with their Studio One software, which honestly is a great DAW, it's actually one of the first DAWs @groove-logic started producing with. Set Up Your Home Studio

Now that you have all your equipment, it's time to set up your home studio. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

-Choose a room that is as quiet and isolated as possible

This will help eliminate background noise and ensure that your recordings are as clean as possible. If you have a spare room or basement, perfect! If not, you might have to get creative with your space. Just make sure you have enough room for all your equipment and that you can control the noise level as much as possible. If you have a walk-in closet, then you can actually use that as a budget vocal booth.

Amazon has some pretty good deals on studio foam if you want to go all out and really turn your bedroom into a more professional studio. It doesn't just look cool, it is really helpful when trying to absorb sound reverb on the walls. So think of it as functional decor, haha.

-Set up your equipment in a way that is comfortable and ergonomic

You'll be spending a lot of time in your home studio, so it's important that you're comfortable while you work. Invest in a good chair, set up your desk at a comfortable height, and make sure everything is within easy reach. Make sure there is sufficient lighting as well. It can be hard working in the dark, plus light keeps you productive.
