Grapthar's Daily Hive Music Feature: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - 'Enola Gay'

OMD - Enola Gay
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark,

which we'll abbreviate as OMD from here on, are one of many groups I discovered through covers of their tunes, one by The Faint and one by NOFX. Like always, I didn't discover the originals for quite a while, but once I did, I got hooked on OMD and have remained a massive fan ever since. OMD was formed in 1978 in Merseyside, England by Andy McCluskey (vocals, bass guitar) and Paul Humphreys (keyboards, vocals), with various other members coming in and out over the years; McCluskey is the only member to remain throughout every incarnation, as Humphreys left in the early '90s and returned when the band reformed in 2006. Their synthpop sound was incredibly influential on the sound of pop music generally throughout the '80s, as they were pushing the boundaries of electronic music very early on. They are often cited as one of the most important bands of the so-called 'Second British Invasion', which occurred with MTV's promotion of videos from bands across the pond. Today's song is the opening track on the band's second album, Organisation, released in 1980. This song was covered by The Faint, which as mentioned before, was where I first discovered it. The original has since become my favorite version, of course, though the cover is awesome and worth checking out too.

Original is no doubt unmatchable but cover is also good.
