The Evolution Of African Music | Afri-inleo Initiative Week 26
The evolution of African music has really brought about many positive changes. Today, African music is everywhere because artists from Africa are moving far away from traditional methods of making music. Many of our African artists are now adopting new instruments and blending different foreign music styles, such as jazz, pop, and hip-hop, with their traditional music. These have really helped them in creating a sound that is uniquely African and has the power to connect with people all around the world. African music has really changed a lot into a beautiful sound compared to the older styles. Several artists like Dbanj, 2face, and so on have played a lot of role in introducing new musical instruments in order to promote African music all around the world.
As a result of adopting new musical instruments, there are now several musical genres in Africa, including Afrobeat, Hip Hop, Apala, and others. Each of these genres is not just a good source of entertainment but also a powerful tool used to promote and celebrate our cultural identity and heritage. African music is often performed with different African languages, such as Yoruba, Igbo, Pidgin English, and others. As a result of this, African culture and language have been loved and are becoming popular all around the world. African music can also be used to tell the stories of communities, remind us of our past heroes, and celebrate what makes us special and unique. Through music, we can bring people together, stop conflicts, and promote understanding among one another. African music is not just a good source of entertainment but also a powerful tool for healing the body, mind, and soul.
In addition, when talking about African music, there is no way you can mention African music without mentioning dance. Dance and singing in Africa are like 5 and 6, they are highly inseparable. That's why most African songs come with their own dance steps. Here in Africa, whenever any new song comes out, it always comes with it's own dance steps, for example, Asonto, Amapiano, zanku, twe twe, awilo, and many more. Each of these African songs has its own dance steps. As music in Africa keeps growing or changing on a daily basis, so also our dance moves are growing. Most African music is more upbeat, danceable tunes, and filled with beautiful vibes. This brings a lot of joy, happiness, and love to people whenever it is played. This is making African music more and more popular all around the world.
Lastly is technology. Technology is playing a lot of vital roles in promoting African music all around. Through the use of technology, African artists now find it easier to produce and distribute their music through different platforms like YouTube, Boomplay, and Audio mack, compared to the CD and cassette eras. With the help of different social media platforms like TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram, artists can easily share and promote their music with their fans all around. Some artists also used the platform to create different African dance challenges in order to promote their songs.
