Does listening to Secular music have effects on your spirituality?

Over the years, I have actually come to discover that music have become a very powerful force in our lives as it cut across every aspect of our lives we can ever imagine of. Music have the power to shape our emotions, shape our minds and even determine the type of thoughts that flows within us which at the end of the day determine our character also.

Music over the decades have become a means of communication and even a means of display of culture. Most of the time, we always wonder what is the display of the secular music and how do it actually affect our spirituality. It is actually a very interesting topic to talk about which I will be sharing my own point of view.

First we need to understand what it actually means when we talk about secular music and also when we talk about Spirituality. Even though both of them are distantly different, most of the time we often misinterprete it. When we talk about secular music, we actually mean music that is actually religious in its own nature. What do I mean by that? When we talk secular type of music, it is the type of music that deals with love, relationship and even cutting across different aspects of life.

On the other hand, when we talk about Spirituality, we are actually talking about someone connection with something that is divine or Spiritual. It means it connect with something outside the world and most of the time linking with our religion. Having been able to define what it means when we talk about secular music and what we mean when we talk about Spirituality, I will be talking about the effect that secular music can have on our spirituality.

The first I will like to talk about is the emotional influence. What do I really mean by that? Like I said earlier, music have tremendous power to actually affect our minds, thoughts and even emotions and when it comes to regular music, it is also not exempted. Most of the time as I have come to notice, when you are listening to music that cut across the theme of anger, lust or just any theme of negativity, then it is capable of actually creating a disconnection from our spiritual world. Most of our spiritual world depending on your religion majorly talks about peace, love and inner peace most especially.

When we continue to secular music, it can create a disconnection and affect our spirituality. Another way is the fact that it can create moral conflicts. Like I said earlier, when some secular music talk about negative themes, it is capable of affecting our own moral standard depending on your religion or standard of Spirituality. When we constantly listen to these types of music, it actually actually affects our spiritual discipline which at the end of the day leads us to wrong or negative morals.

Well at the end of the day, I will say the effect of secular music still point down to individual differences. What do I mean by individual differences? It is capable of affecting our intentions and much more external influences. Well for some people who are more spiritually grounded and solid, it might not affect them when they listen to secular music but for some people, it can easily affect them at the end of the day.
