When I see the Rising Star cards, nothing else comes to mind but that spirit of rock music and street fashion from the early 2000s. That is why today I wanted the drawing to have a more grunge style, and more than just a drawing, this will be a mixed-media fan art where I will try to recreate a graffiti to celebrate the energy that their cards and art generate. For the traditional part I will be using simple materials, a pencil, a piece of paper, and alcohol markers. For the digital part I will be using my phone with Ibis Paint, and Photoshop to create the composition with a free photo from Unsplash. I begin with the traditional, conceiving the sketch of what will become my graffiti.

Cuando veo las cartas de Rising Star no se me ocurre otra cosa que ese espíritu de música rock y moda callejera de principios de los años 2000. Por eso hoy quise que el dibujo tuviera un estilo más grunge, y más que un dibujo, esto será un fan art mixto donde trataré de recrear un grafiti para celebrar esa energía que tienen sus cartas y su arte en general. Para lo tradicional estaré usando materiales simples, un lápiz, un fragmento de hoja y marcadores de alcohol. En lo digital estaré usando mi teléfono con Ibis Paint, y Photoshop para crear la composición con una foto gratuita de Unsplash. Comienzo por lo tradicional, concibiendo el boceto de lo que será mi grafiti.

My graffiti will be directly inspired by the card I329 (XTZ94) “Very cool for the price.” Even though it is a Common rarity card, I think it perfectly represents the Rising Star game. The Luck 1 card is very beautiful, with its sky-blue color and that blue electric guitar as well.

Mi grafiti estará inspirado directamente en la carta I329 (XTZ94) “Very cool for the price.” Aunque es una carta de rareza Common, creo que representa a la perfección el juego de Rising Star. La carta de Luck 1 es muy bonita, con su color azul cielo y esa guitarra eléctrica azul también.

Now I can finally start making the sketch. I will be using a fragment of recycled paper, since later we will digitize the drawing and remove all the white from the paper to leave it with a transparent background and be able to place the graffiti on the wall.

Ahora sí puedo comenzar a hacer el boceto. Estaré usando un fragmento de papel reciclado, ya que posteriormente digitalizaremos el dibujo y quitaremos todo lo blanco del papel para dejarlo con fondo transparente y poder colocar el grafiti en la pared.

This is how my quick sketch turned out, and it is the main idea of the graffiti, to capture elements of the card in a grunge style. I simplified the guitar, added the names in big bold letters, and the instrument identifier in a loose and carefree handwriting. I am now ready to outline the borders in black, as in every graffiti.

Así quedó mi boceto rápido, y es la idea principal del grafiti, plasmar elementos de la carta en un estilo grunge. La guitarra la simplifiqué, agregué los nombres en letras grandes y gruesas, así como el identificador del instrumento en una letra corrida y despreocupada. Ya estoy listo para remarcar los bordes en negro, como todo grafiti.

The next step was to add color using alcohol markers. I also layered some light shadows and some stains, as if the paint had run down the wall due to the force of gravity.

El siguiente paso fue agregar el color usando marcadores de alcohol. También hice, sobreponiendo capas, algunas sombras ligeras y algunas manchas, como si la pintura se hubiese corrido por la pared debido a la fuerza de gravedad.

I will import the photo of my drawing into Ibis Paint, where I will take care of correcting details, removing the white background, and adding some highlights with a white brush.

Importaré la fotografía de mi dibujo a Ibis Paint, donde me encargaré de corregir detalles, eliminar el fondo blanco y agregar algunas iluminaciones con un pincel en blanco.

I will export my result from Ibis Paint, but with some adjustments in the colors and saturation, since I will send this to Photoshop to place it on a wall that will work as a mockup of the graffiti. In Photoshop I will use the multiply layers method to create the composition. Therefore, to obtain more realistic colors with my drawing and the wall, it is better that the export of my resource has brighter, more saturated colors and a lot of general lighting.

Haré una exportación de mi resultado de Ibis Paint, pero con algunos ajustes en los colores y la saturación, ya que enviaré esto a Photoshop para colocarlo sobre una pared que me funcionará como mockup del grafiti. En Photoshop usaré el método de multiplicar las capas para crear la composición. Por lo tanto, para obtener colores más realistas con mi dibujo y mi pared, me conviene que la exportación de mi recurso esté con colores más brillantes, saturados y mucha iluminación general.

I will use a free and open-use photo from Unsplash. The Unsplash license basically allows all kinds of image distribution, so I highly recommend it for creative projects.

Creating the composition in Photoshop to place graffiti is very simple. If you are interested in the subject, I even have several videos uploaded on YouTube about it. Other creators also have very good tutorials, you just need to search: Creation of Realistic Graffiti in Photoshop. In addition, there are many resources to improve them, such as textures and patterns. This was a different but satisfying creative exercise, very easy and recommended.

Crear la composición en Photoshop para colocar grafitis es muy sencillo. Si están interesados en el tema, incluso tengo varios videos subidos en YouTube sobre el tema.
