Silent photographs of music being made
All photographs are silent. As far as I know, light doesn't make a sound. Photographs, theoretically, could make sound, if you printed them on a substance, and used them to agitate the air, treating them as an oriental fan. This post isn't about that, instead it is about a venue called Ancient World, located in Adelaide, South Australia, and a few different musicians who gathered to perform there on the 18th of July, 2025.
It was my first time at the venue, down a laneway off the main strip of nightclubs and bars in the city, and to the left, in the shadows of a multi-level car park. I was there on the invitation of Abbey, who I recently photographed in my series of images called "Postcards of the Night".
I caught the train, disguising my camera gear in a shopping bag. Security through obscurity :)
I arrived early, had a brief chat with venue staff, and some of the performers who were gathered, and sought their consent to capture their performances. All was granted and in good order.
The event invitation I went.
Soundchecks occurred, and then the music began. I captured these images using a 35mm f/1.8 lens, and my 85mm f/1.2 lens. I shot mostly wide open, and that was required, due to the low levels of light in the venue.
The performers were a mix of what I can only describe as ethereal, moving, and intimate. Stories and anecdotes of deeply personal events and deeply meaningful and profound bits of their lives were interwoven between tracks, and a real connection with the small audience was forged.
Many people were already friends, some people left as friends a new. I had some wonderful conversations with strangers, and because this was meant to be a belated celebration of Abbey's birthday, we all ate cake. Delicious cake.
This event the performances were very grassroots, and very authentic. Ordinary people performing extraordinary songs in a comforting, welcoming, and warm atmosphere, on what ended as a cold, foggy night. People drank deeply, people applauded, people embraced. People sat on the floor to listen to story and song.
Enjoy the images!
This one is my favorite. Given the energy of the performance - which comes across here - I wonder if the framing was accidental or intended. Either way, it's so dynamic and cool. As the viewer, you feel part of the crowd..
Intended! Very much so! :D I had full run of the venue, I could go anywhere, except behind the bar.

I once read that photography doesn't just involve the camera. It involves feelings, the look of the person taking the picture and the feelings transmitted by the person being photographed. There is so much peace, so much harmony, so much light (despite the night, in these images. Greetings
I was feeling like, even though I was among strangers, there was the ever present threat of friendship.
It was a very dark venue, so I tried to harvest as much light as I could. Not like some dirt of shadow demon, but that light of joy that you've described.
Great Shots, full of rhythm and energy

Thank you! :)
Those are great pictures! I do think you captured the music in some of them, there's a way of interpreting songs in silence. Thanks for sharing!
I think i was the only one with earplugs, it made it a bit quitier, sort of preparing me to distill the images into silence.
Agree - decent results. No annoying blur. 😎
The focus spent a lot of time hunting though :D
You say "All photographs are silent", and yet I swear I can hear some of these. Great pictures, man. And what a night it must had been.
P.S: B&W pics hits harder, I don't know why
Thank you, you're not the only person who said that you can hear the pictures! I'm glad! :D
I don't tend to do a lot of black and white conversions. I should work on it. I am driven by colour calibration ... lol
As much as I love music and photography, this is amazing, putting this together, you've really done a great job, the quality of the picture is fantastic.
This is my favorite
I was sitting on my butt at the front row for this one :D
