Jazz-funk cloud over New York rooftops

Where did the Budos Band find their first permanent musical home? In the studios of Daptone Records, where analogue recordings were still being made well into the new millennium, and Amy Winehouse was a regular guest. It just suited the band, who seemed to have been addicted to jazz since their high school days in the 90s.

In den Studios von Daptone Records, in denen auch nach der Jahrtausendwende noch analog aufgenommen wurde und Amy Winehouse Stammgast war. Es passte schlicht und einfach zu der Band, die bereits seit der Highschool Zeit in den 90er-Jahren dem Jazz verfallen schien.

The New York boys were roaming the Manhattan clubs, incorporating the music of The Antibalas, which came from the school of Fela Kuti and the James Brown virus, into jazz.
“We grew up listening to metal and punk,” recalls drummer Brian Profilio in an interview with the Village Voice. “We liked the beats. When we heard a cool hip-hop track, it was all about trying to find the sample. So, we tried to play boogaloo and funk.”

Their first attempts as a band began under the name Las Barbudos, loosely translated as The Bearded Ones. But as more members came on board and the facial hair became irrelevant, they changed their name to The Budos Band. Soon there were up to eleven musicians on stage, playing music that resembled the jazz sound of the 70s.

Die ersten Versuche als Band starteten sie unter dem Namen Las Barbudos, was frei übersetzt als Die Bärtigen durchgehen könnte. Doch, als sich zu der Band noch weitere Mitglieder gesellten und das mit der Gesichtsbehaarung auch nicht mehr aktuell schien, nannte man sich The Budos Band. Schon bald standen bis zu elf Musiker auf der Bühne, deren Musik dem Jazz-Sound der 70-er ähneln sollte.

But even this trend didn't last long, and they began to experiment with soul jazz and Afro-Beat. There is one very obvious way in which the Budos are different from other groups with so many members: The wind instruments are not in the forefront and determine the groove, but the whole spectrum of instruments is in the limelight.

Doch auch der Trend hielt sich nicht lange, und man begann mit dem Soul-Jazz und Afro-Beat zu experimentieren. Die Budos unterscheidet etwas ganz Augenscheinliches von anderen Formationen mit so vielen Mitgliedern: Hier stehen nicht samt und sonders die Bläser im Vordergrund und bestimmen den Groove, denn bei der Band steht das ganze Spektrum der Instrumente im Rampenlicht.

With a Daptone record deal in hand, their debut album 'The Budos Band' was recorded in just three days and was soon spinning on the turntables of New York's jazz-funk scene. It also seems remarkable to me that each of the guys has a “real” job in addition to music. Despite this, the second album was soon to follow, which also stands out for its “creative” name: “II”. As you can see from the titles of the following albums, the band stayed true to this trend.

Mit dem Plattenvertrag von Daptone in der Tasche, wurde das Debut-Album “The Budos Band” innerhalb von nur drei Tagen eingespielt und drehte sich bereits kurz danach auf den Plattenteller der New Yorker Jazz-Funk-Szene. Bemerkenswert scheint mir auch die Tatsache, dass jeder der Jungs, neben der Musik, auch noch einem “richtigen” Beruf nachgehen. Trotzdem folgt rasch das zweite Album, welches auch durch die “kreative” Namensgebung auffällig ist: “II”. Exakt diesem Trend bleibt die Band treu, was am Titel der folgenden Alben abzulesen ist.

Meanwhile, some members have left the band, but this has had no effect on the quality or the creativity of the music. Everything that can be added to jazz positively continues to be incorporated. From Afro-Beat to funk, soul and rock elements.

Zwischenzeitlich stiegen zwar einige Mitglieder aus der Band aus, doch hat dies weder der Qualität, noch der Kreativität der Musik beeinflusst. All das, was den Jazz positiv ergänzen kann, wird auch weiterhin eingebaut. Angefangen vom Afro-Beat, über Funk und Soul, bis zu Rock-Elementen.
