The soul of a master in my hands: My experience with Samuel Pérez's cello [Eng/Spa]

Sometimes, as musicians, we spend years studying with instruments that, although we are fond of them, have their limitations. But there are days that mark a "before and after" in our perception of sound. Recently, I had the good fortune to experience one of those moments: I held the cello of maestro Samuel Pérez in my hands.

For those who don't know him, maestro Samuel Pérez is a leading figure in the world of cello playing in Venezuela. Having the opportunity to participate in a recital with him was already an honor, but what I didn't expect was his generosity in allowing me to play his personal instrument.

From the first touch of the bow on the strings, I understood the difference. It wasn't just an instrument; it was a solo beast.

The maestro not only let me explore the capabilities of the cello, but also showed me his most prized tools of the trade: his bows. I was able to try out a baroque bow, with its unique, light articulation, but what really left me speechless was a bow with over 100 years of history.

Feeling the balance and wood of a bow that has vibrated for a century is an almost religious experience. There is a memory in those materials that compels you to play better.

I confess something to you: during the course, I was overcome by a kind of "creative desperation." As soon as the official activities ended, I would rush to close the classrooms as quickly as possible. Being alone with that cello was what I wanted to end those days in a great way.

Those extra minutes of study didn't feel like work; it was an exploration.

I wanted to discover how far that sound could go, how my study pieces felt on an instrument of that caliber. I played Schumann's concerto, Bach's suites, emblematic pieces by Beethoven, and much more. It reminded me why we love what we do: the tireless search for beautiful sound.

This experience taught me a clear lesson: the instrument does not make the musician, but a professional instrument opens up interpretive doors that you never knew existed.

I leave feeling motivated, with the sound of that cello engraved in my heart and the desire to continue working hard so that, one day, my own sound will have that same elegance.
