A Batch of Music stuff...
Sigh... it has been a crazily busy weekend, and also continuing through this week. I was hoping to have a bit of a lull to learn stuff for the coming two weekends... but it turns out that the symphony orchestra was short players, and I am stepping in from the last rehearsal... that will be interesting and slightly hair-raising! But I never liked rehearsals, so jumping straight in just before the concerts sort of is quite fun!
Anyway, I do have to do this transcription for the following weekend. I had found a piece of music that our ensemble will use in our Classical-period concert on historical instruments, and it turns our that is a SINGLE original copy in a library in Vienna. I have the digital copy now... but the clefs are really old fashioned.
Now, as Early Music specialists, we read MANY more clefs than modern Classical musicians... but this one is definitely a rarer one... one more commonly seen for singers from that period... well, earlier than this period! And so, to avoid public embarrassment... I will rewrite the line. Sigh... work to do.
... and as I unpacked the viola d'amore to learn the concerto that I have to play this weekend... yep, broken string. One of the lower more expensive ones... but thankfully, I still have two of those in reserved. Gut wound in silver... However, my total string stock is starting to get disturbingly low again... and I will have to make a large bulk order. Likely to set me back about 300-400 dollars...
... Bah... it wasn't even a proper snap, just an unwinding. Still, unusable...
And weirdly enough, every season, the symphony orchestra is giving out some decent quality earplugs! I hate wearing them, but when they do rock concerts... well, they are pretty useful. Nice perk...

A broken string is very frustrating. Quite lucky you had some strings in stock.
Yes, it is always slightly annoying to open the case to that... but I generally have a stock of strings... a must have for a performing musician.
That's a bummer about your string! At least it didn't happen in the middle of a performance or something. I remember having to sight read music back when I was in band. It was one of the aspects of competition and it was always a bit exciting.
Ah yes... breaking a string in performance is quite a shock! And then the hurry to get it replaced means that it always takes that little bit longer when you know that you have colleagues and audience waiting for you!
