Children are like sponges. A phrase that we have heard throughout our existence. That's right, from their childhood they have all their senses receptive to capture all the information that comes to them from the environment where they are.

One of my passions, since I was a teenager, is to enjoy music with the highest possible quality. For that reason, I have always found that result, in the audio equipment of the 70's to 80's era.

At home, my two children would repeatedly ask me: Dad, why do you have old stereos?

My answer was short and understandable for their tender age: because they are the ones that make the music I like sound better.

As adults, they have met some friends of mine who share this same passion, and have read some of my posts related to the subject.

A few months ago, some of their friends visited our house with their parents. They were delighted to hear the cleanliness and quality of the sound coming out of my speakers, and they found the sound equipment beautiful.

Sitting in the living room, one of them said: we have a modern, black and plastic Sanyo equipment, but the music is not as good as what we feel here.

It was then that the same question, furrowed the air among those present:

Are the old audio equipment better than many of today's modern ones?

This time, my answer was more extensive.

• For its better construction. With a metal front. They were made to last over time. Not like today's plastic equipment, which has a programmed obsolescence to last a few years.

• A design that catches you by its seriousness. Manufactured at a time when the best brands competed for the best equipment.

• Electronic components that can always be changed, and easily accessible, in case of any technical problem.

• Hi-Fi quality sound as a result of their excellence. All analog, and nothing digital in its electronic scheme. An audio that feels full-bodied, with great dynamic contrast, that reaches out and grabs you, being as real as possible to the original recording.

• They enhance the beauty and soul of a home. A plastic equipment lowers the scene, it never looks the same as a well elaborated design, made in metal and more if it is not black adonized.

• Vintage equipment of a specific make and model has a history of tradition, appreciation and respect. That is worth more than any price.

• It gives us emotions. It takes us back to times when our grandparents or parents enjoyed this equipment in their life stages.

• Just by seeing and touching them, we are filled with pleasure (even if they do not work). Because therein lies part of the passion and magic of these: they seduce us with their lineage, their history, their appearance, the quality of their construction and their exquisite audio.

• Buying a vintage audio component is not an expense. If you take care of it, it will increase in value over the years. Therefore, it will always be a good investment.

They looked, without saying a word, but their gestures reflected that they understood my thinking. The father even said to his wife: we will sell our sound equipment, and we would like you to help us buy some vintage equipment when you can.

Friends of this creative community, I have tried to make my children appreciate the value of these components. As we age, the years go by fast and health takes its toll. Just like humans, equipment occasionally gets sick, has accidents and needs attention. This does not mean that they lose their value.

Even so, we may pass away and leave this earthly plane, and they will remain at home as sacred totems.
I hope that over the years, our children will value the history and love of their parents for them, and the tradition can be maintained.

I wish that, not the opposite. I would not want them to be given away as old junk that takes up space, or sold at a laughable price. Only time will tell the last word, but I have faith that they will know how to appreciate the passion and love that their dad felt for his hobby.

¿Papá, por qué tienes equipos de música viejos?

Los niños son como esponjas. Una frase que hemos escuchado a lo largo de nuestra existencia. Así es, ellos desde su niñez tienen todos sus sentidos receptivos a captar toda la información que les llega desde el medio donde se encuentren.

Una de mis pasiones, desde mi adolescencia, es disfrutar la música con la mayor calidad posible. Por ese motivo, siempre he encontrado ese resultado, en los equipos de audio de la época de los años 70 al 80.

En casa, mis dos hijos me preguntaban con reiteración: ¿Papá, por qué tienes equipos de música viejos?

Mi respuesta, era corta y entendible para su tierna edad: porque son los que mejor hacen sonar la música que me gusta.

Siendo adultos, han conocido a algunas amistades mías que comparten esta misma pasión, y han leído algunos de mis posts relacionados con el tema.

Hace unos meses, unos de sus amigos visitaron nuestra casa junto a sus padres. A ellos les encantó escuchar la limpieza y calidad del sonido que brotaba de mis parlantes, y vieron hermosos los equipos de sonido.

Sentados en la sala, uno de ellos dice: tenemos un equipo moderno, de color negro y plástico, de la marca Sanyo, pero la música no se escucha con tanta calidad como lo que ahora sentimos aquí.

Fue entonces que la misma pregunta, surcó el aire entre los presentes:

¿Los equipos de audio antiguos son mejores que muchos de los modernos actuales?

Esta vez, mi respuesta fue más amplia, pero directa, sin caer en detalles complejos. Según mi criterio personal y mi experiencia práctica a lo largo de los años, prefiero tener en casa equipos antiguos, de cierta marca y modelos específicos, por estos aspectos:

• Por su mejor construcción. Con un frontal de metal. Estaban hechos para durar en el tiempo. No como los actuales equipos de plástico, que tienen una obsolescencia programada para durar unos pocos años.

• Un diseño que atrapa por su seriedad. Fabricados en una época en la que las mejores marcas competían por los mejores equipos.

• Componentes electrónicos que siempre se pueden cambiar, y fácilmente accesibles, en caso de cualquier problema técnico.

• Sonido de calidad Hi-Fi como resultado de su excelencia. Todo analógico, y nada digital en su esquema electrónico. Un audio que se siente con cuerpo, con gran contraste dinámico, que te llega y te atrapa, por ser lo más real a la grabación original.

• Realzan la belleza y el alma de un hogar. Un equipo de plástico baja la escena, nunca luce igual que un diseño bien elaborado, hecho en metal y más si no es adonizado en negro.

• Un equipo vintage de una marca y modelo específico, tiene una historia de tradición, valoración y respeto. Eso vale más que cualquier precio.

• Nos abriga de emociones. Nos traslada a épocas donde nuestros abuelos o padres, disfrutaron de estos equipos en sus etapas de la vida.

• Con solo verlos y tocarlos, nos llenamos de placer (aun sin funcionar). Porque ahí radica parte de la pasión y la magia de estos: seducen por su linaje, su historia, su apariencia, la calidad de su construcción y su exquisito audio.

• Comprar un componente de audio Vintage, no es un gasto. Si lo cuidas, con los años subirá su valor. Por tanto, siempre será una buena inversión.

Miraban, sin decir una palabra, pero sus gestos reflejaban que entendían mi pensamiento. El padre incluso le dijo a su mujer: vamos a vender nuestro equipo de sonido, y nos gustaría que nos ayudaras a comprar algún equipo antiguo cuando puedas.

Amigos de esta comunidad creativa, he intentado que mis hijos aprecien el valor de estos componentes. A medida que envejecemos, los años pasan rápido y la salud pasa factura. Al igual que los humanos, los equipos de vez en cuando enferman, tienen accidentes y necesitan atención. Esto no significa que pierdan su valor.

Aun así, podemos fallecer y abandonar este plano terrenal, y ellos permanecerán en casa como tótems sagrados.
Espero que con el paso de los años, nuestros hijos valoren la historia y el amor de sus padres por ellos, y se pueda mantener la tradición.

Deseo eso, no lo contrario. No me gustaría que se regalaran como trastos viejos que ocupan espacio, o que se vendieran a un precio irrisorio. Solo el tiempo dirá la última palabra, pero tengo fe en que sabrán apreciar la pasión y el amor que su padre sentía por su afición.
