One step in Poland: December 5 2023

avatar

It’s been the weirdest week to be honest. One leg at home, one leg in my second home, in Poland. Packing, sorting out washing, shopping and in between it all avoiding doing important things that need to be done… like writing or buying insurance, you know?

Last time I reported a week ago to brag about my increased stamina for running. After a chat with my holistic doctor I adjusted my breathing technique and had a longer run with just one walking break in between, then my next run had already no breaks!

According to my running app, I run for just over 30 mins without stopping 🤩 Last time this happened was like… never 😂😂😂

I was very pleased with myself, while another part of me was like:
‘Really? It can be that easy when you listen to the advice of a wise person and listen to your body?’

Apparently so! I was almost surprised when this didn’t end up with any injuries. Seems too good to be true 😂

Anyway… This week is my last at home and on my usual run day - Friday - I will be driving to Poland, so I decided to skip the Monday run and will go on Thursday morning instead. Not sure when/if I’ll be able to make my next post, so I’ll commit to the run already 😉

Daily walks at work still happen of course. Sometimes I need my umbrella, sometimes come back to work with wet socks. What can one do? I guess I’ll bring spare socks to work next time.

Of course I can’t go away without saying hi and bye to my favourite doggies. My friend also cooked a dinner for me and we watched some cheesy tv programmes. A kind of thing I never do at home, cause I don’t have a tv. I guess I need some practice before spending some long time watching tv with my mom 😁

For now let me watch Alfie’s happy face. Right in my camera!

Until next walk 💙

The dogs and cat look content!

I'm wondering-what was the advice given how to breathe when running? We hike some serious hills here and I struggle with that all of the time!

Good job with your 6704 @actifit steps for the day. Take care and have a safe drive to Poland!

Hey, thank you. They’re always so happy to see me 😁

As for the breathing, initially I was counting my steps to maybe 7-8 to breathe in and the same amount of steps (or plus 1) to breathe out. When I got down to around 3 steps per breath I would stop running and start walking while gasping for air, until I could breathe normally again and then run again with controlling my breath with counting.

My holistic doctor said I should continue the controlled breathing also while I’m walking in between the runs, rather than gasping for air. After doing it during my next 2 runs I was able to control my breathing better. It would still drop from initial 7-8 steps per breath to around 4, but then it would stabilise there and go back up to 5-6 after a while. I also slowed the running down a bit and only speed up again after my breath stabilised.

Not sure if that makes sense or if it would help with hiking, but for me it was also about tuning in to my body and responding to it, rather than pushing myself to exhaustion like I did before.

Thank you for explaining. Several years ago, our valley experienced smoke from wildfires that was so bad, you could not see the sun. We hiked unfortunately and from that point on (plus we have had the wildfire smoke ever since except for this past summer) I began to have more issues with breathing and hiking. A friend suggested it might be exercise asthma, which kind of makes sense, possibly brought on with the smoke.

I think I might give your technique a try as some of the hills in our everyday (or we try to do it at least 3-4 times per week) hike are well over 45 plus percent grade! There are 7 hills of that variety just to get up to the higher and a little flatter trails!

Take care and have a lovely day!

Ahh, sorry to heat about the smokes. It sure must have had an effect.

I don’t know about asthma, maybe that’s correct too, but I don’t like to be defined by the labels of issues/sicknesses. If it came out there is probably a way to make it go away is how I like to think. Of course, that’s not always easy or possible, but the best we can do is try.

I say that because this year I developed sudden allergies and have been struggling with them throughout spring/summer, until I found this holistic practitioner who helped me change my diet in such a way that allergies disappeared in couple weeks. I was blown away, seriously.

In the same way, I settled into thinking that it will take me 6-8 months before I’ll be able to run for half an hour without stopping, yet I got there within a space of a month!

Things can change pretty fast and drastically when we commit to changes and have the right person to guide us.

I do hope you’ll find the way to improve your breathing. It seems like hiking is your passion 🤩

There are also many breathing techniques in yoga. Maybe trying some of them would help too?

Take care of yourself 💙

Thank you @fantagira7 for the information! I will see what I can do. It is maddening when you can't breathe!

I can imagine! I managed to get my breath under control really well now, but the last 2 runs I still had to take breaks, cause my shins are getting sore and I won’t be able to see my holistic guy until new year 🙈

Shin splints I take it? Somehow or other, I rarely get those but hav had them in the past. I'm grateful as they are aggravating! Take care!

Yeah, I run into shin splint every single time 🙈 They started showing up their ugly head again just before I left for holiday and while I’m running here too, so I took a whole week of break this time and slept a lot and today I went for a shorter run - barely 3km and was able to run without stopping and very little pain. Hopefully if I take it easy I’ll finally build up my lower legs strength enough to forget about the shin splints once and for all 😁

They aren't fun, although I would often torture myself by rubbing them which hurt so bad but also felt good. Weird, I know!

Take care my friend and have a lovely day!
