Live Big Band Evergreen and Killing Me Softly
Welcome to the second video. This second video contains two songs, “Evergreen” and “Killing Me Softly.”
First “Evergreen.” A song made famous by Barbra Streisand. This is one of those songs that grew on me. The bass part seems easy. I should be playing every note perfectly. 😬
Dynamics are extremely important in a song like this. Swells in any other version of up-and-down and volume you can think of or highly appreciated. I wish the chart had more dynamics written. Unless they’re trying to tell me be almost the same volume the entire time. I think it’s just an old chart and they expect the bass player to listen well.
The second song in this video is called, “Killing Me Softly”.
I know, I know, the Fugees did it. Everybody telling me that they did it is annoying. I don’t care. It’s not what we are doing. The version we are performing doesn’t sound like the original and it doesn’t sound like the stupefied version that they let the Fugees do. Don’t think Puff Daddy didn’t have something to do with that. Suspect all your musical heroes.
Anyways, the version we’re doing is in a musical feel we would call a twelve-eight shuffle. It’s swinging and it’s not straight. It took two or three rehearsals for me to help people figure that out.
I don’t remember how the previous two versions of the song felt… I think the original is a straight ballad feel. This version we’re performing is reminiscing of east coast gogo music.
