How Do You Feel About Adulthood?

When we were kids and teenagers, we all craved adulthood, mainly because of the freedom that comes with it.

I can remember wanting to make certain decisions for myself.

What kinds of decisions were they?

They were simple ones like dress choices, shoes, and hairstyles. Then it felt like I could handle anything because I wasn’t exposed to the other side of life.

All I wanted was to grow up quickly.

I remember praying so much to pass JAMB so I could start living alone and experience Uni life (the type I see in movies).
Seeing happy adults every day and the way they looked peaceful and knowledgeable was very attractive to me. Adulthood looked so interesting until I became one.

Permit me to say that age only makes up 50% of the adult title; the other 50% comes from identity. This comprises how you handle yourself, how you react to situations, and how you make decisions. Adulthood, to me, means knowing who you are and the blocks you are made of.

Adulthood isn't a simple journey; it comes with a lot of hurdles, even for the rich.

The songs from these artists, who stays in different parts of the world, explain how chaotic the transition from childhood to adulthood can be.

The first is a song titled "EASTSIDE" by Benny Blanco, Halsey and Khalid. It talks about our life as teenagers when we love to have fun, hang out, and make a lot of friends. Then, in adulthood, we begin to feel the pressure for growth and self-improvement. We want to be better people at all costs and create a brighter future.
Physically, we begin to pay bills and work hard for money—something we had no idea about during our childhood.

The second song is titled "Adulthood Anthem" by Ladé, a popular Nigerian artist. This song brought her to the limelight due to how relatable it is to Nigerians and other developing countries.

Lade sang about what adulthood means to the average Nigerian citizen.

It is a stage where you have become so independent that you can’t ask your parents for money. You can’t depend on friends either because they’ll say they don’t have any…

However, amidst all the chaos of adulthood lies the interesting part of life. It is the time when we learn from our experiences and those of others. It is the time when we explore the world, look for what it can offer, and how we can make the most of those opportunities.

It is the time when we laugh, cry, and intentionally make fun of ourselves. To me, it is interesting, and sometimes I do wonder if animals do experience this wave too. Lol

Adulthood is not a scam; rather, it is an interesting journey. I have also come to realize that adulthood comes with the gift of quality humans.

I wanted to experience adulthood, but what I didn’t want were the struggles that come with it. Adults have to pay for almost everything—big or small, in kind or cash. They struggle to create a balance among many responsibilities, feel pressure, and recognize their enemies.

"We can do anything if we put our minds to it." From EASTSIDE.

As adults, we can make changes in our lives. We have strong and resilient minds to start over again after failing.

We accept that life comes with challenges and we strive to overcome them.

The best thing for an adult to do is to be happy. Happiness can’t be postponed to later days because adulthood is a journey. The problems are never-ending, so we enjoy the little achievements while we work toward the bigger ones.

Adulthood is not a scam. It is the time when we discover ourselves and make the most of our existence in the world…

Well written! Every child dreams of growing up someday. But as children, we know little about the responsibilities that lie ahead. The way we understand and see things is different from adulthood. We have fewer things to worry about and fewer responsibilities. As children, we crave many things, and nothing feels more fulfilling than living our dreams as adults. But what if one knows what lies ahead? Can they stop growth? No. In fact, a child who is not growing will not be happy. Physical growth is constant and cannot be stopped, but personal growth is a choice. One can decide how to grow themselves personally.

Adulthood and Childhood. Somehow I can relate with you, the wish to become an adult when being a child, and later when a teenager and such. That said to me it became clear quite early in my childhood that being an adult is a much harder life than being a child or teenager. Perhaps I realised this because I always saw my parents working hard and long hours. Perhaps also because at an early age I was helping my dad out with his business. Perhaps also due to the fact I started to live by myself when I was 15 years of age, in a kinda student home, but not for students, at least I wasn't a student then and (much) younger than others living in the same house where we shared the kitchen, bathroom and such. Anyways, though I at some stage wanted to do something else than going to school (Uni later on), I was given the total freedom and support by my parents to not walk into proper adult life (ie move out of school, start jobbing and such), their support I always embarrassed and pushing out adulthood for as long as I could.

It seems you had your eyes wide open while growing up. I mean, it must have been tough, but in the end, those experiences build you up and add to your strength.

One thing I’ve noticed about people who grew up this way is the knowledge and wisdom they possess.
It can be harder for those who grew up behind closed doors and only get to experience life at a later age.

Like me, I didn’t experience much of adulthood until my recent years.

Honestly, I think for each individual, it can be a different experience in whatever form one grows up. Not everything is determined by circumstances and the environment one is in. Part is also our character which is at least partially, defined by our genes. My take is, in whatever situation one is, or through whatever phase we are going, always positivity can be found, even if it doesnt feel like that. I think it is the art of finding that positivity and use that to progress. You finding adulthood relatively recent, is all good. You had the chance to not act as an adult longer, which has it positive sides, am pretty sure. Just find that and caress that.

I totally agree with you. There are a lot of benefits that came with my kind of childhood.

I think it is the art of finding that positivity and use that to progress.

Thank you! I agree it's better to focus on appreciating and growing what we have.
