The Relationship Between Music and Fashion

If there is something I have come to discover about music, it is the fact that it carries so much power beyond what we think. Most of the time, music standing on its own can cause tremendous changes just that we underate it. Well it is not only music that we underate, I strongly believe that there are a lot of tools that humanity possesses that can cause tremendous change. One of it also is fashion.

I know we might have heard about fashion several times and most of the time, when we hear fashion, we always limit it to only dressing. But fashion has so much power beyond what we wear. It has ability to influence our humanity positively or negatively depending on how we view it.

Combining both of them, I mean music and fashion have so much power that we can ever imagine. Music have it's deep root most especially in Nigeria that genre like Afro beats, hip-hop and many more are taking over the world, fashion in recent times have become the important extension of music most especially when it comes to music.

In fact recently, my observation is that both music and fashion always goes in hand. Whenever you see a musicians, they are always associated with their identity based on their sense of fashion which most of the time comes in form of the choice of clothes they put on. Well I will say the strong bond that exist between music and fashion didn't just start in this recent decades, it has been existing even in 1960s and many more.

Checking the history of music for example in country like Nigeria, it started with afrobeat. But it didn't only come with only the music dimension, it also comes in the side of clothing. There was this person called Fela Kuti, he was the one that first of all brings the afrobeat but he didn't only bring the music, he also brought the clothing identity. Back then, Fela cloth is know for his right pants and generally his outfit fits into African patterns.

As time goes on and as we begin to advance in life, we begin to have new musicians coming up with new clothing identity like baggy jeans, Versace clothes and many more. All these are the latest trend now happening in the fashion industry but all of these were pioneer by musicians showing the strong bond between fashion and music. For years, music have become a strong fashion influencer. I have seen musicians been signed as brand ambassadors of fashions.

I am very optimistic that it will continue to get better and better as time goes on, we are still going to have more advanced type of fashion and which I certainly will be pioneer by musicians and generally the music industry. But my major concern is the fact that I want us to have a positive sense of fashion instead of the negatives ones that is spreading around in our present generation.
