While carrying out my house chores, I heard a beautiful song by Dolly Parton.
I realized that parent has the role to play in teaching their kids, contentment and confidence and also teaching them to beat their bully without using their fist.
The story behind the song is so inspiring and it's about a mother who had no money but showered love to her child thru a box a rag someone gave them.
It was pieces of many color and while reading the bible, she recalled the coat Joseph worn. She sewed each piece with love and made out a beautiful coat out of the box of rag.
What I love most about the song is how she told her child that, the coat might be made from rag, but it was from a place of love. And alone is worth more than gold.
Our homes should be a safe haven for our kids. From infancy we need to teach them contentment, and how being emotionally available for them is more important than just giving them fancy things.
I admire the bond between the mama and the child and I admire how she taught her child through every stitch.
I also love how she boosted the child's self confidence, reminding her that one is only fooled if they chose to be. One is only mocked, if you look down on yourself and let others make you feel worthless.
Even if we don't have everything we wish for, at least we have our loved ones who can sacrifice everything within their power to make us feel protected. We don't want to ever look down on ourselves. We always want to remember that, our situation is never permanent.
Someone who is poor today, might become rich tomorrow. We dont want to put ourselves in a situation where people will begin to make jest of us and our predicament.
The song teaches us to value our dignity and not trample it on the ground.
Aside from the lessons I found in the song, I enjoyed the beat and every lyrics hit the right spot.
Dolly Parton is indeed a very demure artist, who through music has empowered the mind of her listeners.
Contentment is the key to happiness, we will never appreciate what we own, until we learn to love what we've got.
Images used belong to me.
