¡Canticum Merú se presentó en el Teatro Teresa Carreño! Homenaje a Modesta Bor, Festival Nacional de Coros [ENG/ESP]
Greetings to everyone in the Lifestyle community. Today I’m joining you here to share a new chapter in my life: I can finally write about everything that happened during our choir gathering at the National Choir Festival held in Caracas in honor of the centennial of musician, composer, and arranger Modesta Bor. The festival began on June 11. It was undoubtedly a very meaningful, emotional, and exhausting experience—all at the same time. Here, I’ll tell you about how that first moment unfolded for us, Canticum Merú, who traveled from Puerto Ordaz to attend this beautiful event. Join me.
On Saturday, June 13, at 11:00 a.m., Canticum Merú had a performance scheduled in the José Félix Ribas Hall at the Teresa Carreño Theater. It was an important event we would share with the Adelis Fréitez Polyphonic Choir (Barquisimeto), the University of the Andes Workers’ Choir (Mérida), and the University Choir of the Central University of Venezuela (Caracas). That day, it would be our turn to perform in honor of Modesta Bor, since, as I mentioned above, the event began on Thursday and continued through Friday, June 19. We traveled on Friday, June 12, and arrived that night. The next morning, we all got ready so we could leave for the venue on time. We were very excited, happy, and a little nervous about it.

El día de hoy me uno por aquí para compartir con ustedes un nuevo día en mi vida y es que finalmente puedo escribir todo lo sucedido durante nuestro encuentro de coros en el Festival Nacional de Coros celebrado en Caracas en homenaje al centenario de la músico, compositora y arreglista, Modesta Bor. El mismo empezó desde el 11 junio. Ha sido sin duda una experiencia bastante significativa, emotiva y exhaustiva. Todo al mismo tiempo. Aquí les cuento cómo se vivió ese primer momento para nosotras, Canticum Merú, quienes viajamos desde Puerto Ordaz para poder estar presentes en este bello evento. Acompáñenme.
El sábado 13 de junio a las 11:00 am, Canticum Merú tenía cita en la Sala José Félix Ribas del Teatro Teresa Carreño. Un acontecimiento importante que se compartiría junto al Polifónico Adelis Fréitez (Barquisimeto), la Coral de Trabajadores de la Universidad de los Andes (Mérida) y el Orfeón Universitario de la Universidad Central de Venezuela (Caracas). Ese día seríamos nosotros quiénes contaríamos en honor a Modesta Bor, pues cómo comenté arriba, el evento comenzó el jueves y continúo hasta este viernes 19 de junio. Nosotras viajamos el viernes 12 y llegamos en la noche. A la mañana siguiente, nos preparamos todas para poder partir a tiempo al lugar. Estábamos muy emocionadas, alegres y un poco nerviosas al respecto.
Personally, it wasn’t my first time at the Teresa Carreño, but I had never been there as someone who would be performing. It was wonderful to feel that soon, in that hall, we would be showcasing all the love, effort, and quality of the repertoire we had chosen to honor Modesta Bor. Moreover, we all wanted to delight the audience, our guests, and, of course, ourselves. The songs by Modesta Bor that Canticum Merú performed were: “Coplas de Cuna” (with poetry by Emma Pérez), “A una niña” (poetry by Aquiles Nazoa), and “Ribereñas” (poetry by Federico García Lorca). My favorite is “Ribereñas,” as it’s particularly cheerful, very special—almost as if it were a game. We also included some sacred songs, such as César Alejandro Carrillo’s “Ave María” (he was a student of Modesta’s), which I consider to be one of the best.
Personalmente no era la primera vez que yo iba al Teresa Carreño, pero nunca antes había asistido cómo alguien que se presentaría allí. Fue hermoso sentir la sensación de que pronto, en esa sala, estaríamos nosotras demostrando todo el cariño, esfuerzo y calidad del repertorio elegido para honrar a Modesta Bor. Además, todas deseábamos poder satisfacer a los espectadores, nuestros invitados y por supuesto, a nosotras mismas. Las canciones de Modesta Bor que Canticum Merú presento fueron: Coplas de Cuna (con poesía de Emma Pérez), A una niña ( poesía de Aquiles Nazoa) y Ribereñas (poesía de Federico García Lorca). Mi favorita es Ribereñas, pues es particularmente alegre, muy especial, cómo si de un juego se tratara. También se añadieron algunas canciones sacras, cómo el Ave María de César Alejandro Carrillo (él fue discípulo de Modesta), que a mí me parecer es de las mejores.
When the time came, we walked with our heads held high and without fear, ready for it. So we sang nonstop until the very last song. I have to say that, between songs, I was scanning the crowd for my dear mother, Arelis, who had told me she’d be there that day to see us. And yes, after singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” I spotted my mother in the audience (with her round glasses that sparkled from afar and her blue dress), clapping nonstop. I couldn’t help it—tears began to fall. It was an unforgettable moment for me, and it will always be in my heart. When we finished, I could only savor that moment, cherishing every round of applause, every song we sang—because even though there were probably a few mistakes, for me it was perfect.
Then I was able to spend time with my mom, hug her, feel her joy, and savor that beautiful achievement that had spontaneously come into our lives—one I didn’t want to let slip away. Outside, another moment of music and dancing unfolded, and we stayed to enjoy it. That day I wasn’t able to hear the other choirs, but luckily, on Sunday I was. My mom had to head back to Valencia, and I just wanted to go with her. I hugged her very, very tightly, and we said goodbye. We, Canticum Merú, did something beautiful that day. Cuando llegó el momento, nosotras caminamos con rectitud y sin temor, listas para ello. Así cantamos sin cesar hasta la última canción. Debo decir que yo estaba, entre canción y canción, buscando con la vista a mi querida madre, Arelis, quién me dijo asistiría ese día para vernos. Y sí, luego de cantar "Somewhere over the rainbow" encontré a mi madre entre el público (con sus lentes redondos que brillaban desde lejos y su vestido azul) quién aplaudía sin cesar. Yo no pude evitarlo y las lágrimas comenzaron a caer. Fue un momento inolvidable para mí y siempre estará en mi corazón. Cuando terminamos yo solo pude apreciar ese momento, guardar cada aplaudo, cada canción cantando porque aunque probablemente hubieron algunos errores, para mí fue perfecto.
Luego pude compartir con mi mamá, abrazarla, sentir su alegría y disfrutar de ese bello logro que llegó de forma espontánea a nuestras vidas y que deseaba no perder. Afuera, se formó otro momento de música y baile y nos quedamos disfrutando de ello. Ese día no pude escuchar a los otros coros, pero por suerte, el domingo si pude. Mi mamá se tuvo que ir de vuelta a Valencia y yo solo quería irme con ella. La abrace mucho mucho y nos despedimos. Nosotras, Canticum Merú, hicimos algo hermoso ese día.
