Music is everywhere in Nigeria
For Nigerians, music is not a thing kept for parties, concerts, shows or movies. It is now a thing that is rampant everywhere. It is in every corner you can look into and that leaves me with the concept that music is truly a universal language because it is everywhere.
I went out today and down from the bus to where I was headed to, I could hear one song or the other. Just every tiny thing is now an avenue from music. What shocks me most is how you can find it in the most expected place. You could be in traffic on the road, and the next thing, you see a person who is pushing his wheelbarrow filled with the things he wants to sell and the next thing you hear music coming out from the wheelbarrow. It can be understandable when it a person that sells gadgets and electronics. I get the person is trying to advertise his product but tell me why is yam seller blasting music from his wheelbarrow filled with yam. It is fine to listen to music and you can do whatever you want to do but in a public space. Ha! What is the noise for? You can use an earphones.
I know what I want to say is going to be funny, but I find it annoying. Why are you working on the road with a Bluetooth speaker blasting songs along the road? That is noisy and find it weird. This is something that sounds strange but it happens more often than you think. I did not have much words to say when I saw it for the first time. It was so weird that it left me in shock. But it goes to show that music is really everywhere in Nigeria, whether you want it or not.
Aside from some of the strange times that music has been played in public. Moving on, we cannot leave the topic without talking about the fact that Nigerian musicians are one of our prestigious icons that have been pushing our culture and Nigerian eccentricities. I find it amazing when I talk to non Nigerians and they get to talk about Nigerian musicians that they have grown to love because of their songs and afrobeats. Frankly speaking, there is no way you cannot talk about the explosion of afrobeats in the world of music without coming to terms that a large amount of Nigerian musicians actually contributed to afrobeats being a huge deal. You cannot talk about afrobeats without mentioning the like of Davido, Wizkid, Burnaboy, Terms, Ayra Starr and more. Their voices have created a huge name and brand style for them. Making it lovely to see as they become more and more famous, and there is a relatable connection to them because they are Nigerians.
Even rooted in the Nigerian culture, music is a big deal in promoting the culture and its heritage. There are instruments like the talking drum related to the Yoruba people and native flute related to the Igbo people. This makes it more beautiful to see that culture can represented through the use of musical instruments. I have a perception that music being a part of our culture is a strong reason why music is everywhere in Nigeria. It can be heard it from the corners of your street down to the premises of your apartment. Therefore it is unique language which makes it special when you share the music with others.
