Vinyl records - an item interesting just for collectors?

Unfortunately, the golden era of vinyl records is a thing that not many of us can remember from our own experience. At least, I can't. I do recall having a pile of vinyl at my parents' home, but we have never listened to them due to the turntable being broken. Also, at that time in my childhood, we already had cassette tapes as the main medium for music, so the collection of vinyl records from my family was already gathering dust on some of the shelves. That was a sad destiny for these flat discs containing all this beautiful music.

It changed when my son, for a reason known just to him, bought a gramophone a few years ago. It was funny as he went to Barcelona for a week with one backpack and came back with an additional suitcase and a heavy box. I waited for him at the train station, and when I saw him, I was a bit confused - what is all this stuff now?

I bought a turntable and some vinyl records, among other things. Mom, look...

👀

Okaaaay... let's admit that it is not so bad that someone is interested in buying used books, vinyl records or turntables. 🤷‍♀

That same summer when we visited my parents, we took a few classical music records from their collection and added to the ones my son bought in Barcelona. That is how this collection was born:

20250901_165451.jpg

You can notice one common thing among these vinyl records... it is all classical music. Of course, it is not just a coincidence. That is the genre of music he is studying, and although you can find literally almost everything on YouTube or Spotify nowadays, he felt that curiosity to listen to these pieces from this peculiar medium. It is quite a different feeling, that is true.

20250901_170238.jpg

This collection contains pretty famous composers, pieces and performers. If we listened now to this music instead of reading this post, we could hear Mozart's Requiem, Schubert's Unfinished Symphony, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, or the Symphony No. 3 by Johannes Brahms, among others. We could also hear my favourite Piano Concerto (No. 3 by Rachmaninoff), Bach, Berlioz or Mendelssohn's music, as well as The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns; here is also the vinyl posing in my hand.

20250901_165622.jpg

There are also many Russian composers, like Modest Mussorgsky, with Pictures at an Exhibition, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov with Scheherezade and Russian Easter Festival Overture, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, with various masterpieces (Piano Concerto No. 1, Swan Lake, Ouverture 1812 and String Quartet No. 1 in D major).

20250901_165827.jpg

20250901_165852.jpg

That is a lot of great symphonic music... although we can also find pieces for piano solo. You can guess that this is my favourite section of this collection. 😉 This is all Chopin, and especially interesting one is the recording with Maurizio Pollini. He was a great pianist, famous for his interpretations of Chopin and Beethoven.

20250901_170332.jpg

Ivo Pogorelich is a well-known Yugoslavian pianist, whose interpretations and style brought him recognition but also criticism when he was young. His career was largely marked by his private life. (He stopped performing for some time after his teacher/colleague/wife died, but later became active again.)

20250901_170350.jpg

As the last item in today's collection, I present to you this record by the composer Johann Strauss Jr. It is interesting because it has a booklet in its cover, which brings the biography of this composer accompanied by important dates, compositions and images.

November is here, and so is the monthly theme in the Hive Collectors community:

Vinyl Records

I must apologise for skipping two months (actually, being late two months, as I planned this theme for September already). However, here we are with this new topic now; better late than never. 😇

Do you have vinyl records? Do you think they can gain popularity again? Maybe vinyl records are interesting just for collectors...? I would be glad to read your opinion and see your collection during this month!

I used to have my vinyls until our last move i decided to dump them, since i use FLAC files these days on my NAS to stream to my stereon in the living room or in my car .
I used to play vinyl on birthday parties but also at a lokal community center when there was a party .
but that is a long time ago + 40 years :)
Somewhere in the 1990 we got CD players and in 1997 / 1998 we got mp3 after that the vinyl lost it magic for most people .

Congratulations !!

Oh, that's cool that you used to play vinyl at parties! 👍 Yeah, times have changed, but maybe it is not all lost for the vinyl records. Collectors will have more interest in them one day again, I hope 😉

Wow, I love this theme. Just this morning, I said I was going to write about the few collections I got from my parent's home some weeks ago, exactly September, little did I know it was going to be the topic for this month.
Expect my post soon.

Have a fabulous November.

Good morning @mipiano, I'm as surprised as you are by the affection many young people like your son have for vinyl records. Like all collections, the one you're showing us already has a story. Some records came from a trip to Barcelona, others from your parents' house... and little by little, that collection will become something unique and personal, a collection of memories from a classical music lover and musician.

I've already written about my vinyl collection in another community, sharing my understanding of vinyl culture from the 80s to the present. I need to think about how to present my collection from a different angle... but... I'm delighted with the idea.

Returning to the record collection you're presenting in this post, I like the booklet format of the Johann Strauss Jr. record, and the covers of the Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Piano Concerto No. 1) records.

I'd also like to invite another great vinyl collector, my friend @soho1958, to participate in this initiative, in case he's interested.

Big hug. Happy Sunday.

Good afternoon @enraizar. Yes, it is surprising but that is a very good sign that there are still young people who will find value in vinyl records! :)

The booklet of Johann Strauss is very nice indeed, I wish all had such a booklet, but others are simpler. True, some have interesting covers, as the Rimsky-Korsakov.

Thank you for inviting your friend here to this post; I hope he will see the tag and like the idea. :)

And for you - I am sure you will have creative ideas on how to present your collection for this monthly theme! :D I saw that post of yours, and thought that it was also a coincidence haha, as I already had the idea for the topic and the photos taken two months ago 😂 I was a bit slow haha. I am looking forward to reading your contribution 😉

Good afternoon @mipiano... I really love that young people are interested in this format... although I don't quite understand it. 🤔

I already have an idea... which started as a sensible idea and has gone a bit crazy... 🤪 there might be two posts... I've already been taking photos this afternoon.

Big hug. 🤗

It was surprising how much of an impression it made on him to see his son arrive with a record player and some vinyl records. He was immersed in a sea of childhood memories, where music was heard through those grooves full of history. In a world where the ephemeral often reigns, he was moved to see his curiosity about what was once a treasure.

This connection between generations reminds me that music, in its purest form, has the power to unite us and evoke emotions that transcend time. May each shared melody be a bridge that brings us closer together.

What a beautiful collection of vinyl records, especially because I love classical music and it reminds me of my best friend who plays the piano beautifully. I've seen her play live and I love it. My favourites are also Chopin and Beethoven, but there are many others too. When I was a child, we had vinyl records at home and we also had a record player... it worked!

But I didn't get to enjoy it very much. There were mostly my mother's records, by her favourite singer, Sandro, and then one of mine by Los Parchís. Then the record player broke and now it's just a memory. But the music sounded really nice and my godfather also had records. He was Italian and listened to Italian music. It's an excellent idea for this month, I love it, it will bring back lots of memories for lots of people! Big hug!

You are surrounded by people who play classical music, and it has also influenced you!! And you also play music - though colours on a canvas 😉
I am glad you also had vinyl records, however I guess they are not here in Spain with you... so I can't really ask you to participate, but who knows!!! I have the feeling that you can always find your way...maybe an exhibition with vinyl records will happen during November in your city and you can participate - everything is possible! 😇

Thank you very much for the support and I am also glad that you like the theme! Memories are indeed what these items can bring, apart from music ;) ! ✨

Not only do I not have them in Spain, but ever since I was a teenager, I'd say after the age of 7, when my parents separated, all that disappeared. But I have them in my mind... hmm... I'll think of something, maybe a shop... I'll look for something out there! And if not, don't worry, there are so many things, like summer, 🤣

You and your son have a beautiful collection <3 I am a big lover of Russian composers, especially. No Stravinsky? :) I think vinyl is having a weird resurgence in the last something years - a lot of young people are getting into it, which I love, since the sound is, in my opinion, unparalleled. It doesn't sound the same on speakers, on great earphones, nowhere. Also, I find it's one of those hobbies that encourages you to collect. I didn't think I'd enjoy so much building a collection, piece by piece, but it's certainly thrilling.

Hehehe, no Stravinsky at the moment, but who knows with what my son can surprise us next time he comes home from a trip 😂

That's a lovely collection ! I've still got mine in the loft somewhere, mostly 1970's rock and heavy metal with a couple of the coloured vinyl limited editions that were popular back then. I've even got the first album I ever bought, a slightly uncommon copy of Hawkwind's "Warrior at the Edge of Time" were the cover folds out to make a shield. Does anyone remember 78's ? My grandparents and parents had them, although by the time I started buying LP's they were being phased out.

I think vinyl has a great future. The sound quality is massively better than any music you can get online or in digital formats where the files are compressed and lose the finer details. I can also see it coming back for long-term archival use. It lasts far longer than data recorded electromagnetically on most digital media. Floppy disks and cassettes are already fading into nothingness.

Rock and heavy metal can also come, no worries! :D It is just that we have classical music haha.

Oh, you do have a great experience regarding vinyl records. And I think and hope you are right, that it does have a future. If quality can win over quantity and other media, then vinyl is not lost! Thank you for your opinion, I appreciate your words and also looking forward to seeing your collection if you find it! :)

I see a huge rise of popularity of getting vinyls with people around my age (aka Gen Z). Why? Not sure maybe most is getting fed up with streaming services, maybe it’s just music labels marketing vinyl’s right with additional merch (consumerism..) who knows :).

But I’m a huge 50s-60s music fan and it’s just a more special feeling hearing your favorite album on vinyl. Like being closer to the experience?
I have a few records from when Elvis Presley was still with us and I’ll never forget that first listen. So so special :)

I also loooove love loveeee(!!!) your collection!! Especially from Pogorelić❤️ (a fellow Croat 😎)

Thank you very much for liking this collection! It seems my son felt something similar. It was a huge, but nice surprise that he spent money on vinyl records and not on clothes for example. 😆 And Pogorelić is a great pianist!! Hvala 😇

To add - be proud of your son - I love that. my vinyl stuff mainyl old rock/metal plus my first Techno ones i used to play as DJ.

In terms of value - these pieces have a lot vlaue for many people older (like me old fart) but can also be financially be a good invest for your son.

BTW - feel free to post such great content in the music-community - we lack a bit dewcent content apart from (you kow what i mean).

And hey again :))
I am indeed proud of him; he also chose music as his future profession, but as we didn't have a turntable, I never imagined he would come home from his trip with such an acquisition. So, it was a surprise, a good one of course ;)

My posting pace became a bit irregular and scarce... but I hope to get back to regular posting (although music became quite a rare topic in my content 😅). But thank you very much for the invitation. 😇 Greetings and tschüss!

What a nice way to start this vinyl collection, thanks to your son 😍 It's nice that younger people are interested in things like this from the past, it shows respect and curiosity for what has already happened (and at the same time hasn't happened haha)

My grandfather has a lot of vinyl records, but he won't lend them to me, and I'm not going to ask him for them 😂

I think it will only remain for collectors. With technological advances, few people are still interested in these music formats. Cassettes have practically disappeared, at least here haha 😂

Beautiful vinyl collection, beautiful way to play music from years past! ❤️

Cassettes have practically disappeared

Here as well... but guess what? I have a collection of cassette tapes too 🤣

Vinyl records are better than cassettes, although almost everything comes in digital format nowadays as it is easier and more practical. But just imagine... having a vinyl with music performed by Celine Dion 😍. Well, many vinyl records with her music... it would be a whole collection! May Buhito make some owl-magic so you get such a collection one day! ✨🦉

This was very much a fun read!

I have three large boxes of vinyl albums sitting in my closet, and now I want to open them and have a look at what's there; heavy on late 1970s and 1980s punk rock and new wave, I know.

Seems vinyl is making a comeback with many people — not just DJs — and I am always enjoyed the large size cover art and liner notes!

Abrazos!
