False Rhapsody
For something a little different for my birthday a couple months ago, my wife planned a night out for us with tickets to a surprise show. Granted, it had her in mind more than me, since she is a big Queen fan, but I don't mind at least some of their music - the more popular ones that is. However, it has taken me quite a while to actually appreciate any of it. Obviously, it wasn't Queen, it was a tribute band called Majesty from the UK - but it was pretty decent.
After a shaky start.
We suspect the singer was having some vocal issues as he kept going off stage and there was an unscheduled intermission, but the shaky start was with the first number - a melody of songs that didn't quite hit the mark. But after that, it was pretty good.
Of course, it is hard for anyone to truly replicate the voice of Freddie Mercury, as he had an incredible range and stretched it in most of the songs - however, there were a some songs where the singer had the right range (like in Crazy little thing called love), and a few others where he subdued the range to make it work. Overall, the show was decent, and the guy had a great voice if not having to compare it to Mercury - and he was also a decent pianist.

The band was good too, though I thought it was funny to have the guitarist (playing Brian May) wearing a silly wig that looked more like Slash, but still a decent guitarist. As was the drummer and bassist. And what I did like was it was more of a band, with a bit less polish and more adjustments as they were playing along, with the singer signalling to the sound engineer for more volume, and the guitarist and bassist making adjustments as they went. And at the intermission, they took requests from the audience, which they played to finish off the night.
My wife requested the entirety of Bohemian Rhapsody, as they only played it in a medley earlier.
They finished with it.
But there was one thing I didn't like.
Audience participation.
Normally it is probably a cool thing and when Queen played at Wembley in the mid 80s, it would have been phenomenal - but this was a sit-down event with Finns. Finns aren't great with participating or cooperating with anything at all, so when he turned the mic to the crowd,
Crickets.
And tumbleweed blowing through.
And he did this a lot. This might have been to give his voice a rest due to some cold or whatever, but it was obvious from the start that it wasn't going to work, yet he kept on trying. Maybe with a different crowd it would have been suitable - but not this one.
Normally I am not a huge fan of tribute bands, but I think this is because I am not a big fan of anything at all. I don't mind cover bands at weddings though and prefer those to a DJ. Still, it was a nice night away with some tapas and a cider to start the evening, and the live music of the show. A nice change to working like a slave of old in the garden.
If you could see any band or act that is no longer available, which would it be?

I have been to several concerts, but of opera and instrumental music. Once I went to a special Bee Gees concert, I was wearing my earplugs -I can't stand loud music, especially bass at frequencies of 400 Hz and treble between 13000 and 18000 Hz-. I would definitely pay to be in a room with the Bee Gees again and listen to tunes like First of May, Melody Fair, To Love Somebody, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, I.O.I.O., Don't Wanna Live Inside Myself, My World, Let There Be Love, Lonely Days, and Saved By The Bell.
What happens at those frequencies?
The Bee Gees have some pretty decent music for their time. Many people don't know it, but while they are English, they actually formed the Bee Gees in Australia. :)
Bass at those 400 Hz frequencies makes me nauseous, and high frequencies between 13 and 18 thousand Hertz make me ache. For example, a police or ambulance horn makes me dizzy.
Oh wow I haven't come across anyone worse than me yet, you poor soul D:
It seems like you had quite the night. Even though the tribute band had a bit of a shaky start and some vocal issues like you said, it seems like they ended up putting on a good performance overall.
Freddie Mercury’s voice is definitely one of a kind, so it’s impressive that the singer was able to nail some of the songs, like Crazy Little Thing Called Love. I liked how you mentioned the band’s improvisation and the fact that they made adjustments on the fly. It really shows their musicianship, in my own opinion, though.
It's great that your wife got to hear Bohemian Rhapsody in full, too. To me, I'm not really a fan of band music, so I couldn't recommend any.
What kind of music are you into?
I prefer gospels music and a bit of R&B.
I've only attended concert once, and I want to have it again but it was expensive . I hope someone surprise me a ticket concert too😄
What would you want to see if you could?
want to see if there are stalactites and stalagmites😁
Never listened to Freddy mercury, but a friend of mine is fan of him. Thus, I read his life story. If not remember wrong, he died of AIDS. Perhaps, he might have recovered from it if had lived nowadays.
Yeah, he died of AIDS.
It seems that not many die from it these days - in the Western world...

Dear my bro @tarazkp !
Do you like Queen's Freddie Mercury songs?
Japanese and Korean men often have a cult-like worship of Freddie Mercury!
He has a sexual appeal that East Asian men simply cannot replicate!
Since ancient times, East Asian men have been fascinated by the mysteriousness and charm of Aryan culture!
I felt that Freddie Mercury was crazy popular with East Asian men because he was Iranian!
Freddie Mercury has a singing ability and sexual appeal that East Asian men cannot possibly imitate, and is still wildly popular to this day!
I didn't know he was that popular there.
he wasn't Iranian though :)
That does look like a great night out! I can appreciate a good tribute band and the last one I saw was Janis Joplin.
Kinda unrelated but a group of long time friends and ex-bandmates often get together to play shows with cover tunes for events and festivals. It really gives you an appreciation for music you may not have enjoyed that much when you get down to learning all the finer details.
I became more of a fan of Bruce Springsteen after learning a few of his songs for a show last weekend.
Another person I haven't appreciated until more recently :)
That is awesome! Quite a few Finns are into this kind of thing, with garage bands with groups of friends - especially people in our age group :) I wish I could play something, or sing in tune. I am jealous!!
Sounds like you had a fun night, even with thr little hiccups. Honestly, I think there's something really charming about live shows that aren't super polished - it feels more real and interactive, even if it doesn't always go perfectly.
I love the idea of just going out and enjoying live performances.
A good night with good music, good food, and a change of scenery sounds like a win to me.
What would you want to see?
Now, I don't have a particular show in mind. But I love seeing a mix of things, from smaller, or local bands, to larger live shows with lots of energy. I'm also a fan of comedy and theater - anything where the audience can really feel connected to the performers.
Sounds like you had a great time. I don't know who I would really like to see in the concert, I prefer more quiet and quality performances not the big concert halls or stadiums, those are usually disappointing.
I have never really been a concert person when younger, but I have seen some pretty big acts. The best by far was Prince - it was a phenomenal concert and he had so, so much energy - he played 7-8 encores. almost 4 hours straight.
Haha. we have a lot of those bands here in the UK. When "Majesty" get's successful enough, there will be a tribute band to them too :)
In life no one should attempt to force anything, if it is not there try another day, if it is not coming take a chill pill and try next time. It will only be a mess to force it
Freddy Mercury as professional singer was an absolute legend
