It's easy to play any musical instrument: all you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself.

- Johann Sebastian Bach -

I've been on Hive for a long time, since June 2017, and over that time have shared some of my life on the blockchain, touched on other parts and simply refused to directly open up about so much more. I guess one could say I've taken the iceberg approach meaning that only a portion of me is visible above the surface. The stalwarts, people who have followed me all the way through, and others who read a post here and there, will see a few of the elements that make up me and my life and the others, well whatever, I guess.

I've touched on my musical journey a few times but not in any great detail, it's something quite private to me and I like to retain elements of me and my life for myself and those around me however for perspective, I began playing the piano as a child of four and a half years old and continued for many years. I also played the trumpet and bass guitar although not as well as I play the piano.

I did all my piano grades up to Grade 8, just below the attainment of a Diploma here in Australia, and along the way went through the process of examination with the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) through the Elder Conservatorium of Music (nicknamed The Con) here in Adelaide, Australia's senior academy of music.

It was difficult and many thousands of hours of practice, training and learning went into it; the theory and practical aspects.

As a child, I'll admit to having not liked it; it wasn't so much the playing, it was how I was driven to do it by my mother, something I didn't value. I don't want to go into it, but that's one reason I don't play for people now, I keep it a very personal thing and am content with that. I am glad I had that grounding though, it's an amazingly rewarding skill and brings a lot of enjoyment, and frustration I suppose as well; learning new pieces can be a challenge.

Today, I want to share three pieces of music that I learned to play over the years and that I can still play to this day, although probably not quite as well as I did when I first learned them.

Hill Street Blues theme - I'm kissing you - Clair de lune

✳️ Here's a link to YouTube where you'll find all three in a single YouTube playlist.

Hill Street Blues was a police show I used to watch back in the 1980's (when I was allowed to). I loved the theme song and recall wanting to play it so much. I saved up for a month or so until I had the money to buy the sheet music and sat at my piano for hours a day until I mastered it. Clair de lune was one of the pieces I had to master for a grading exam. I got to the point where I could play it with both hands tied behind my back. Ok, not really, but playing it was like breathing so comfortable it felt. I'm kissing you is a piece of music from a Romeo and Juliet movie released in 1996 starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. I'm not going to tell you why I chose to learn it, suffice it to say that I did.

Music is a massive part of my life, and one I'll never fully explain to others. I'll never play in public, will never put videos of my playing onto the internet and most people I know have no clue I even play; those that do know not to ask me to do it, they know I'll refuse. I play all the time though, sometimes endless scales to keep my fingers moving and doing the right things, sometimes the pieces of music I've learned along the way or those I want to learn; either way it gives me something, moments I can't gain else where through doing other things.

Do you folk play any musical instruments or would you like to? Tell me about it in the comments below if you're so inclined.

I own a 5-string banjo, and I can play a few tunes on it. Perhaps I should write a post about it one day. I am quite out of practice. The Mother Thing plays piano, and enjoys everything from hymns to classical to songs from musicals to ragtime.

I love the banjo and also have one here, although I'm not the one that plays. It sees the light of day now and then and it's such a pleasing sound. I'd say you should get that thing out and pluck it! Then post about it too, why not huh?

You always surprise me with all the stuffs you. How can a person be so perfect and posses all kind of talent....certainly, I never seen a guy who do all kind of stuffs, Photography, shooting, .....and now music.

No doubt music is key in everyone life, and somewhere each of us are related to it, either singing, listening or playing....I like to listen music playing is far away. I once broke a guitar cord while trying to touch it....I can not go so easy ....

most people I know have no clue I even play;

You ....."play it hard" 😉🥂

How can a person be so perfect and posses all kind of talent

Thank you but I'm as far from perfect as a man could possibly be. I'm the antitheses of perfect...That means the opposite.

I have a live life ethos and that means I do things and don't see the point in saying or thinking, I'll do that tomoorow. Tomorrow might never come. So, over my life I have done many things, some I don't do any more and some I do to lesser degrees. I'm fortunate to have been brought up in an environment that promoted a go and do it attitude and I was never afraid to do just that. So, yeah, I've done a lot and those things have etched a new facet into me and one that combines with the others.

Music is a special thing, and whether one makes it or listens to it, there's value. It's something that has opened me in ways I can't (won't) describe and I am a better man for having it in my life. I could say the same for many of the things I do, or have done, I guess.

That is so neat that you still play well. I have seen you refer to playing the piano in a flash in another post. Yeah... I caught that.

My experience was not like yours, but I also had a childhood experience of taking lessons that I didn't want too. Below is a link to the old thing if you care to see. (or maybe you saw it already back then.) I don't know how to make one of those one word links. :)

I still haven't gotten back to trying to re-teach myself. I can't play worth a hoot anymore, but on the rare occasion when I sit down to it, my fingers still almost remember where they are supposed to go.

In the past, I used to have a dream once in a while that I sat down to the piano and just began to play and magically, I could play anything I wanted just like a professional. I don't know what was up with that. LOL

I was lucky to have had a very broad upbringing as far as the things I was exposed to and pretty much everything was represented. I was, unfortunately, pushed a little hard on the piano though and that has caused me to not want to play in front of others. I'm glad I can still play though, and obviously have my own piano.

I had a piano teacher who had a Wurlitzer once, he was such an asshole though; lazy. I guess it got to a point where I was more advanced them he and there wasn't much else he could do. I was moved to a little old lady who wielded a ruler pretty deftly cracking my hand when I messed up. Thanks little old lady. It made me better though.

Maybe you should take it up again, do some scales and get the fingers moving, it might be fun.

Below is how you add a link with a word.

Add the link between the quotation makes leaving them in place and the word you want where it says word leaving the arrows in place.

Yeah, me too! I play the piano, and the guitar, the violin, the mandolin... although I do not talk about it much here. I'm glad to know that you took piano lessons as a child. Dad and Mom believed in the "total person", so you will not believe what other things they required me to do, hehehe!
Great to know... and thanks for the music!

I was fortunate to have grown up in a cultured environment, one in which personal values were demonstrated and taught. My parents were not very well off, so they went without to ensure we had what they felt were the tools to carry us into adulthood with a greater chance of being the right people to find our own paths. It worked.

I'm not surprised to read you have had a musical background and I'm sure those other things you mention have had a lot of influence on you also. In my experience, those who have had such opportunities tend to be more well-rounded, more vibrant and engaging.

Thanks for commenting, I appreciate it.

Wish to join in the fun here by contributing something here in the comments but I just can't my friend. As mentioned before, I'm not musically inclined and doesn't know how to play any instruments. However, if there is one that I wish to pick up, it would be to play the Drums! 🤗

The only music that is associated with my life are mostly what I curate and listen on Spotify 😅

I have Spotify also, it's the app that gets the most use on my phone. I have two sets of wireless earbuds too, mostly because I often go through the charge on one set by mid-afternoon. I'm not one to like going without music in my day.

I don't have costly earbuds, they are SoundPEATS Air 3 and were cheap. I bought the second set to send to someone who needed them but it turns out she did not...so I have two. It works nicely.

Wow! Galen, you are a mystery!
Well I tell you that I love music, like everyone else. I believe that of all the arts, it is the one that has the greatest capacity to connect. Right now I am studying plastic arts, which is the most developed skill in me, but when I finish I would love to study an instrument. I like Cuban music very much, so the tres is one of the instruments that attracts me the most. Also, the bass and in percussion, the tumbadoras. Of course singing would be the pinnacle of happiness, but I don't know if I can handle that much. hahahaha😂🤣

It's so great you have an interest in playing an instrument and I think you'll find it very rewarding. If you're passionate about it, like you seem to be, you'll do much better in the learning process. Which instrument would you choose today, right now, if you had the ability to select just one?

As for singing...I sing terribly, although I sing in the car when I'm alone...so I don't destroy anyone's ears!

0

I sing too, in the bathroom and when I have the opportunity but I know I don't do it well because of people's faces.
Today I'm sticking with the tres, it has a very nice sound, it transmits joy and transports me to the countryside. It is also like percussion on strings. It gives me the same feeling as the bass.

Hmm, we cold do a Hive duet! (It might be terrible, but we'd have fun). 😁

I like the Cuban sound, the traditional music. The tres is a good choice.

I have lived surrounded by musicians and they are my favorite people. My husband is capable of composing songs without playing a harmonic instrument, he plays Afro-Cuban drums called Tumbadoras but which are known in the world as Congas. My son also plays the drums and guitar. I would have loved to learn an instrument, the violin would be my choice. However, I don't feel with the gift of music, yet I can't live without listening to it.
I can dance, yes, all music. Dance and dance!!! It is the way to express music with the body.

May your piano never be silent 🙏

Only the lucky ladies get to have a husband that play Tumbadoras! 😊

Music is awesome but...dancing. Hmm, I love watching women dance (I'm a guy after all) but I personally dance like a drunken monkey on cocaine with a headache and a sore toe and vertigo issues. It's not a good look. 😉

Learning to play the piano when they're young is a topic I am familiar with. My sisters were enrolled to piano lessons in elementary. I was lazy so I didn't join them. They performed recitals in school, and our grandfather loved playing piano with them.

It's good that you still enjoy playing. I wanted to learn the violin, but I heard it is on of the most difficult ones to learn. The instrument is also expensive. As I grew up, I realized that I am tone deaf. So I decided not to learn any instruments anymore.

Your sisters have made good choices I think, having a musical background is something to be proud of I think.

The violin...yeah, it's difficult to play. My nephew plays, @mrbonkers, he's only five but has been playing for almost two years. It's not sounding all that good, but he'll get there. I plan to do a post on it soon, maybe next week.

Being tone deaf won't help a person play an instrument I guess, maybe the bongos would be ok, but who wants to play the bongos? (I actually like playing the bongos.)

I'm a drummer for many years now, it's always been my joy, and happiness seating behind the kit, I love every moment with it and can never get enough.

My very friend close friend is a keyboardist and I've been developing interest to learn it but somehow someorder thing will get in the way,

IMG_20230918_181241.jpg

So yesterday I made a decision to finally began a training session with him which I will follow through, and then I would learn the bass guitar has well ...

I was never formally trained like you (it sounds fucking awful tbh), but had a few lessons in the early 90's. I told the teacher I wanted to play Borderline by Chris DeBurgh (crooner stuff), and he happily obliged! None of this formal way of teaching hehe..., but I forgot the lot.

My father has been into music, saxophone, and clarinet for almost five decades. I enjoy music but never actually thought of playing any instrument. Even if I did one thing would be sure: I definitely would not take him as a teacher, although he had a few good students over the years...

He wanted me to learn piano when I was a kid and even bought me Richard Clayderman cassettes but with no end result in me even considering to get into music. Dunno if my attitude in this regard was really a good one...

Great pic, by the way.

Hey playa playa

I Love You GIF by Tyler Resty

saved up for a month or so until I had the money to buy the sheet music

The days before the internet, hey! We had to do things the honest way.

The piano is a beautiful instrument to play - even though you were forced, you now have a badass skill. I always wished I could play an instrument, but there was never enough for extra activities. Growing up as a young adult, I started drum lessons. And didn't get quite far. It was hard with work and life and all that. to start, learning an instrument at 24 is not easy as well. But I even bought a kit and all that.

such is life. Maybe when I'm older, I'll try again...

0
0
0.000
avatar

Haha, yeah I had to save pocket money for the sheet music, I was only twelve so it took a while. It was worth it though and I still have it somewhere.

You've still got the drum kit? You should get it out and wake up the neighbours every Sunday morning at 06:00. 😉

0
0
0.000
avatar

That's pretty cute, hey. 12 year old you must have been pretty chuffed! Kids today don't know how easy they got it!

LOL, I sold the kit years ago - there wasn't enough place in my flat when I got married, and it was just collecting dust at home! Maybe one day, I will get it going again. My one set of neighbours is pretty annoying - I am tempted to blast music loudly at that hour! But I'm not that petty!

0

Yep, back then 1982 or so, things were different. I didn't mind having to save up my pocket/off jobs money, it taught me a lesson. Not long after I started my first job and thirteen and the lesson continued.

I'll never play in public

Great. I despise this whole 'street piano' thing everybody does. Everyone has to make a video of it in hopes they become viral. It feels like the ultimate cheap attention grab lol.

I grew up kind of musical, and now I'm a music teacher teaching Choir, Guitar, Composition & band... sometimes AP music theory.

It's super fun and fulfilling and I get to constantly develop my own abilities as I go along. But yeah I'm not a fan of performing and hate being asked. I'm happy to go all out with energy and enthusiasm in my classes but ask me to perform and I'll wriggle my way out as hard as I can haha. Partly cause i'm generally shy, but partly I guess due to some dramatic and traumatic failed performances growing up that just embarrassed me!

That being said, my parents were pretty off-hand compared to yours. They got me to guitar lessons to start off and that's about it. No questions asked when I chose music as my University course choice, even though I knew at the time it was useless for my future (well apparently not that useless in the end)

I hate being asked to perform, not that I've been asked much after I left home at just over seventeen. I play for me, for the pure enjoyment of it.

How beautiful the piano is, I love it, it's my second favourite instrument!

Don't worry, although I would love to hear, not see, but hear you play the piano, I won't ask for it.

You play video games???? Cool! Many years I played, not anymore but I did, I started with Age of empires, I like strategy games haha and Warcraft, but not online but computer games. I played online spaceship and castle games.

I don't play any instrument, but I love the violin, what a delight for the ears, it excites me, it transports me, I think since I was a little girl. I leave you one of the ones I like and with it in the background I write poems.

And this one is so sad that it squeezes my heart, it belongs to a famous movie.

Of course I would like to play the violin, I know it's difficult but anything is possible.

Beautiful publication! Thank you Galen!

Nah, I hate video games, I have far better things to do with my time...I'd rather chew my own face off than play a video game. (Where did you get that from, that I play video games?)

Oh, I misunderstood, sorry it must have been the translation.

I'm sorry now I read it again and I misunderstood. Instead of uploading games to the internet, I translated something else.

I played when I was a teenager, not anymore but I liked them at the time.

It must have been difficult to learn the piano, but you must play it beautifully, it's many years of practice.
Beautiful photography, I love it!

Yeah, it's difficult to learn the piano, or any instrument for that matter, but as one progresses it becomes a little easier. There's always more to learn, but I got good enough not to embarrass myself, and to pass my assessment exams with excellent results.

Surely you are more than good. A hypothetical question... it's just an imagination, would you play with mipiano? I saw that in my mind. Nice duo.

No, I'm not interested in playing with someone else.

You play the piano for you and your soul, I would do the same if I played the violin.

That's awesome to hear of your Tales of a true Pianist. I have to admit ( though I refuse to feel regret) I only reached Grade 3 by the age of 13 as I pushed my way from further lessons to more freedom as I saw it at the time. But what I never achieved for this reason, I still very much admire in those who did stay the distance.

I know so many who stopped playing an instrument, some regret it and some do not, it's a personal thing I guess. I think it's good to have had that grounding though, so many do not have the chance.

I learned so much during these few years of theory lessons that I am still grateful for. I play guitar and am happy so all is good. Maybe yet I will hone my keyboard skills some.

The guitar is something that always eluded me...I mean, I had one, but the skills to play it were something that escaped me. I played the bass guitar though (averagely well) so that's something.

Learned how to use a turntable and buy LP's, no one in the family very talented playing instruments.

Dad had an old banjo and trumpet, sister had an electric organ, younger son a guitar and lessons, not one played a full tune that I heard.

The Hill Street Blues I recall, most probably watched the show, nice piece to learn on piano an instrument I always enjoyed listening to.

I used to play a lot of records on my parents turntable, they had some amazing music, a lot of which influenced my interests later in life. The good old days huh?

Turntable we always one or two in the home, Mom had a great love of spinning her tunes so we grew up with that. Then older brother brought Beatles and Rolling Stones as a teenager, so it began each to the own taste yet all was pleasant. Still good going back!

When my oldest son was 2-3 he used to love sitting and playing at the pianos at the electronic store. Because of that I thought he'd enjoy lessons to learn to play, but he rejected those pretty strongly. I didn't have the energy to force him to continue. And my youngest never liked the piano at all so I didn't try with him yet (but he's only 6 now, so there's time). I wish I had learned the piano when I was young. When I was in university I took some private lessons. I got pretty good at going up and down all the scales, but both my and my tutor's schedule changed the next semester, so my brief piano learning adventure came to a close. I no longer remember how to play them, though perhaps my fingers do if I found a piano to sit down at. Probably not, though.

I played clarinet all through grade school, then continued to play it in a swing jazz band during university. In university I taught myself guitar enough that I could play some favorite songs.

If I had the time and money, I think I'd love to learn the cello. Maybe when Hive makes us all rich so I can both afford one and afford the free time to practice it. I love Bach. I would love to play along with his music.

Piano scales, and getting good at them are vitally important to playing other things well, that's why they exist. I spent close to an hour daily doing them. Didn't like it that much, but looking back, I see that it taught me more than just how to do scales well.

As for your kids...well, sometimes it's not meant to be and a person's talents lay elsewhere. They're young though, so there's still time if there's enough interest.

I like the cello. I'm always reminded of a girl I knew at school...played the cello. Ah she was a bonnie lass, pretty as a picture and she made the cello sound just as nice. It wasn't to be, her and I, but I always think if here when I hear the cello.

I hope you get one and have the chance to explore that interest.

Ah man, the Hill Street Blues theme is so classic! I mean, not as classic as Clair De Lune, but you know what I mean. You are definitely a man of many talents! I played percussion in school for six years from sixth grade to 12th. I have a guitar at home that I have been meaning to start playing, but I can never find the time to start learning.

It was a cool series on TV and they know how to make themes that feel emotive and appealing; from the moment I guess it was like, yep, I want to play that.

I had a six string guitar for a time...I was terrible at it, but persisted until I realised I was actually way worse than terrible and gave it up. 🤔

That doesn't give me a lot of hope for learning to play myself!

There was a time when I played they keyboard... but back then, I was like 13 years old? I thought I was learning piano. I even got a learning keyboard with a little screen on top that signed me wich key to push to play some songs. I was quite content until they demanded us to play recitals. I had kind of an scenic fight and people just screamed at me because of that. To this day I don't understand why people take music so rigurously and andamand like it's a church or something.

In the end, the presion from my family and teachers was so great somehow it ruined it for me. And also, what I really wanted was to play piano, so when the time came to learn like "salsa rythms" I was like... ew. I wanted to play melodies like the these you showed. Clair de lune... I must admit I had never heard that completely! What a nice piece. It relaxed me on the spot!
Dwelling on these times I find the feeling of coming back to it in the future. Seems like a nice way to spend time.

Like anything, learning can be difficult. It looks easy when watching someone play the piano, or any instrument, but it's not easy, it takes effort, training and practice to do it well. Unfortunately some people come across the wrong teachers and that can make the process a lot harder. Of course, not always does the student hace the aptitude for it. It's a pity that some people are put off by being pressured.

There's many amazing prices a person can play on the piano, I've just listed three I liked, I'm glad you liked that one though, it's one of my favourite ones.

For me it is really captivating to know that you play the piano.

I also thank you for sharing this list of 3 pieces that you know how to play, I think it's a way to get to know a little more that person behind the screen whom I admire.

I don't play any musical instrument but I love music, my favorite instruments to listen to are the violin and the piano, by the way, yours is very nice, I love it.

Music can touch people whether they make it or listen to it and as long as it's felt inside and it moves a person, then I think it's done its job. Yes, the piano is nice, the violin and cello too. I love the sounds a symphony orchestra creates...so powerful.
