(ESP-ENG) Otonoke vs On The Way - Dandadan's opening debate!

With the second season of Dandadan now underway, five episodes in, it's also obvious that we should have its new opening quite internalized. The person in charge of this musical piece is AiNa The END, a Japanese singer who is already well accustomed to the world of anime, having provided the soundtrack for several anime such as Mononoke and The Apothecary Diaries. As we all know, the OP for the first season was created by Creepy Nuts "Otonoke," which truly revolutionized the venues where it was played. But then I've seen this debate a lot on the internet, Reddit, etc., where fans take sides regarding which OP is better, which is a bit complicated.

Ya con la segunda temporada de Dandadan andando con sus 5 capítulos también es obvio que deberíamos de tener bastante internalizado su nuevo opening. La encargada de esta pieza musical es AiNa The END, una cantante japonesa que ya está bien acostumbrada a este mundo del anime ya que le ha puesto sonido a varios anime como Mononoke y The Apothecary Diaries. Como ya todos sabemos el OP de la primera temporada estuvo a cargo de Creepy Nuts "Otonoke" el cual fue uno que realmente revolucionó todos los sitios por donde sonó. Pero entonces he visto mucho este debate en internet, Reddit, etc, en donde los fanáticos se posicionan de un lado u otro en relación a cuál OP es mejor, cosa que es un poco complicada.

- Creepy Nuts - Otonoke

Creepy Nuts has something special about them: they manage to create a melody or sound so particular and characteristic that it stays in your head for a long time. With Otonoke, you're already in a trance 12 seconds into the song; we're already listening to something that activates in our brains and makes us enjoy, whatever they're saying. But it's precisely here where I wanted to dig a little deeper and go to the lyrics to understand them. This opening is quite dense and "dark" in terms of its message; it speaks of feelings like rage, anger, and darkness as an emotional state, while also telling us how we can escape it: by fighting demons. I don't know if people do this exercise, but sometimes I do it because I want to give the OP more of an identity beyond just the sound.

Creepy Nuts tiene algo especial y es que logran crear una melodía o un sonido tan particular y característico que hace que este se quede viviendo en tu cabeza un buen tiempo. Con Otonoke ya a los 12 segundos de canción estás en trance, ya estamos escuchando algo que se nos activa en el cerebro y nos hace disfrutar, sea lo que sea que estén diciendo. Pero es justamente acá donde quise profundizar un poco e irme a la letra para entenderla. Este opening es bastante denso y "oscuro" en lo que a mensaje se refiera, habla de sentimientos como la rabia, la ira, de la propia oscuridad como estado emocional al mismo tiempo que nos va relatando cómo podemos salir de ella: luchando contra los demonios. No se si la gente hará este ejercicio pero a veces lo hago porque quiero darle más identidad al OP más allá de solo el sonido.

The visual aspect also plays a role because these people play a lot with colors, as we see here and will see in the second OP. For them, colors represent emotions; they tell a story through them. When they talk about being trapped or fighting, everything turns red or purple; when they mention that they're emerging from that world or trance to finally be free, the colors change to yellow or blue. These are details that people overlook but that must be taken into account.

Lo visual también influye porque esta gente juega mucho con los colores, lo vemos acá y lo veremos en el segundo OP. Para ellos los colores son emociones, a través de ellos cuentan una historia. Cuando hablan de estar atrapados o de estar dando una pelea todo se torna rojo o morado; cuando nos menciona que está saliendo de todo ese mundo o trance para finalmente estar libre los colores cambian a amarillo o azul. Son detalles que las personas pasan por alto pero que hay que tener en cuenta.

- AiNA THE END - On The Way

AiNA The End is one of the best voices out there, her singing is spectacular. This isn't a competition, but the standards were high with the first OP; surpassing it was a bit complicated. But friends, and this is the crux of this whole conversation, for me this song is much better than Otonoke. Both in sound, melody, the message in its lyrics, and even in its visuals, I think it slightly surpasses what Creepy Nuts did. Do you know the difference? This OP is more of a song; it has the form of something you can perfectly hear with your headphones. The way it starts with her voice and then the rhythm explodes is epic. The chorus is incredible and super catchy. The lyrics. The first thing we are presented with is a message of love where it talks about how despite everything bad in the world, romantic love can be found in each other.

AiNA THE END es de las mejores voces que hay, su forma de cantar es espectacular. Esto no es una competencia pero los estándares estaban altos con el primer OP, superarlo era algo complicado pero amigos, y aquí está el centro de todo esta conversación, para mi este tema es mucho mejor que Otonoke. Tanto en sonido, a nivel melódico, el mensaje en su letra y hasta en lo visual creo que supera ligeramente a lo hecho por Creepy Nuts. Saben cual es la diferencia? - que este OP es más canción, tiene la forma de algo que puedes escuchar perfectamente con tus audífonos. La forma en como empieza con su voz para que después explote el ritmo es algo épico. El coro es increíble y super pegajoso. La letra. Lo primero que se nos presenta es un mensaje de amor en donde habla de que a pesar de todo lo malo que tiene el mundo, se pudo encontrar el amor sentimental en el otro.

In short, the OP is a kind of declaration of love that could be from Momo to Okarun or vice versa. "Even though you're clumsy, I expect great things from you," "your illnesses, your curses, I want to embrace them," and there are a few more phrases like these. Visually, it's a gem; the detail they took in giving Okarun color every time he looks at Momo is a top-notch feature of this OP's presentation; it's like saying she's the reason his days aren't so dark and boring. Hence what I was saying about colors; they play an essential role in the story.

En fin, el OP es una especie de declaración de amor que puede ser de Momo a Okarun o viceversa. "Aunque seas torpe, espero grandes cosas de ti", "tus enfermedades, tus maldiciones, las quiero abrazar" y cómo estas frases hay unas cuantas más. Visualmente es una joya, el detalle que tuvieron con darle color a la vida a Okarun cada vez que mira a Momo es algo muy top de la presentación de este OP, es como decir que ella es la razón para que los días de él no sean tan oscuros y aburridos. De ahí a lo que decía de los colores, juegan un rol elemental en la historia.

So, I'm going with On the Way. It's much more of a musical theme and makes more sense to me in terms of the plot, plus its sound is very engaging. Which one do you choose? Do you care about the lyrics and their messages, or is it just a matter of sound? I'll read you!

Me quedo entonces con On The Way, es mucho más tema musical y tiene más sentido para mi en lo que a la trama se refiere además de que su sonido es muy enganchante. Ustedes cual eligen?, les importa la letra y sus mensajes o es solo una cuestión de sonido? - los leo!

Completamente de acuerdo contigo. Sé que competir con Creepy Nuts es algo absurdo, aparte de que hacen algo a un nivel muy distinto a lo que conocemos, el nuevo Opening de Dandadan se aleja mucho del ritmo Hip-Hop experimental del famoso dúo y se vuelve algo más melódico, profundo y sentimental incluso. También me encanta su coro y el ritmo que tiene, además de su clip que es una maravilla visual (sobre todo como inicia con el POV de Okarun, una maravilla, vale).

Sinceramente no entiendo cómo hay gente que desprestigia tanto el gran trabajo que hay detrás de todo esto solo por compararlos con Creepy Nuts. Luego son ellos mismos los que se quejaban antes de la gente que decía que el dúo japonés era de lo mejor con el BOOM de MASHLE Temp. 2. A veces la sociedad actual carece de sentido y lógica en lo absoluto.

Cuando se habla de gustos es complicado porqué todo el mundo quiere tener la razón. Y la verdad es que nadie la tiene, incluso yo con pensar que este es mejor. Creo que Otonoke está muy en la fibra de la gente por lo mortalmente pegajosa que es pero lo de AiNA es brutal.

Valoro mucho que On The Way sea mucho más escuchable y tenga un ligero sentido.
