(ESP-ENG) Endings or openings, which is better? - Endings Review!

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

A few days ago I talked about what I consider to be the best openings of the season so far; you can see them here: Openings! . The thing is, I started thinking that these topics are always discussed, but the same is rarely done for endings, even though they're also awarded by Crunchyroll, for example. So today I'm going to do a comparative exercise to see how good the endings of the anime I chose last week are and if their quality matches that of their respective openings. I think it does, although there are exceptions.

Hace unos días hablé de los que para mi son los mejores openings en lo que llevamos de temporada, los puedes ver acá: Openings!. La cosa es que me puse a pensar que siempre se habla de estos temas pero muy pocas veces se hace lo propio de los endings con todo y que también son premiados por Crunchyroll, por ejemplo. Así que el día de hoy voy a hacer un ejercicio comparativo para ver que tan buenos son los endings de los anime que escogí la semana pasada y si su calidad se equipara con los OP respectivos, pensaría que si aunque haya sus excepciones.

- OATH - Leina [Nippon Sangoku]

This is the ending theme for Nippon Sangoku, an anime I've talked about quite a bit and which I think is fantastic. Its opening is pretty good because it combines elements of folk music with modern rhythms; nothing like what you hear in this song. Leina performs this track, which has a very J-pop/indie sound. This singer-songwriter is new to writing songs for anime, but with this one, I think she hit the nail on the head. I listened to some of her music to write this review, and one of her defining characteristics is that it's very melancholic and emotional, reflecting the vulnerabilities of humankind. Well, "OATH," or oath in its translation, is exactly that, and the lyrics fit the anime perfectly. It speaks of the protagonist's entire journey and the duality between his duty and the voice of his heart and his wife. He knows that to achieve what he longs for, he will have to break several promises. The song is beautiful, with a really cool and high-quality rhythm and instrumentation, and yes, I think it does the opening justice. It's a very good ending.

Este es el ending de Nippon Sangoku, una anime del que ya he hablado bastante y que me parece una barbaridad. Su opening es bastante bueno porque es uno que combina elementos de la musica folclórica con ritmos actuales; nada que ver con lo que se escucha con este tema. Leina es la intérprete de esta canción, tema con un sonido muy J-pop/indie. Esta cantante y compositora es nueva en esto de darle sus temas a los anime pero con esta canción creo que dio en el clavo. He escuchado algo de ella para hacer esta reseña y una característica que tiene es que es muy melancólica y emocional en donde refleja las vulnerabilidades del ser humano. Pues "OATH" o juramento en su traducción es exactamente eso, además de que es una letra que pega a la perfección con lo que es el anime. Habla de todo el viaje del protagonista y de la dualidad entre su deber y la voz de su corazón y de su esposa. Él sabe que para lograr lo que anhela tendrá que romper varias promesas. La canción es muy bonita, tiene un ritmo e instrumentación muy cool y de calidad y si, creo que le hace justicia al opening. Es un muy buen ending.

- WAY OUT - yama [Yomi no Tsugai]

This anime is said to be the successor to FMA (Fullmetal Alchemist), and honestly, I'm becoming more and more convinced that it's true. It's not just the story and characters, but also the songs. The opening is bursting with energy; it's incredibly catchy and dynamic, thanks to Vaundy. Then there's the ending, which is the complete opposite. It's performed by Yama, a well-known singer who has also worked on other anime projects, like SPY x FAMILY. What's so special about this song? Well, it was produced by Vaundy, yes, the same Vaundy who did the opening. Honestly, if I compare the two songs, I much prefer this ending. It evokes the sounds of the 2000s; it's very soft and, above all, very nostalgic. Endings are generally known to be more delicate; you don't see the same power as an opening, which is why the standard is different. Part of the lyrics speak of the support between two people, that unconditional bond and the connection that can exist between them. It makes sense when you consider that the protagonists are estranged siblings. This song is fantastic.

Se dice que este anime es el sucesor de FMA (Fullmetal Alchemist) y la verdad es que si, cada vez me convenzo más de qué es esto es una realidad. No solo por la historia, los personajes, sino que también por sus canciones. El opening es uno en donde la energía se desborda, es super movido y dinámico de la mano de Vaundy. Llegamos al ending el cual es la cara opuesta de la moneda, uno que es interpretado por yama, una cantante bastante conocido en el otro lado del mundo y que se sabe que ha hecho otras cosas para el anime, SPY x FAMILY por ejemplo. Cual es la particularidad de este tema? - pues que fue producido por Vaundy, si, el mismo del opening. Honestamente si comparo las dos canciones me quedo con este ending y por mucho. Es una canción que evoca a los sonidos de los 2000, es muy suave y sobretodo muy nostalgica. Se sabe que los endings por le general tienden a ser muy delicados, no veremos la fuerza de un opening por eso es que la vara de medir es diferente. Parte de su letra habla del apoyo entre dos personas, de esa unión incondicional y del lazo que puede haber entre los dos. Tiene sentido si tomamos en cuenta que son hermanos separados los protagonistas. Muy top esta canción.

- ASAHI - Lucky Kilimanjaro [Liar Game]

This is probably the most distinctive song among the three presented here, mainly because it deviates somewhat from the typical ending theme. Lucky Kilimanjaro is a Japanese electropop group, hence its unique sound. They are known for their danceable tracks and pop-influenced sounds. Despite this, the song remains deeply emotional because it focuses on one of the protagonists. It's known that one of the goals in writing the song was to provide some calm amidst the psychological challenges of the plot, which is precisely what the anime is: a game/thriller where the worst in people can surface. Its lyrics are clearly an ode to the positivity of life and the possibility of new beginnings, reflecting the anime's animation style. This contrast between the plot and the song is brilliant and well-conceived. While the opening is a gem and my favorite, the same can't be said for the ending. It's good, yes, but for me, this "battle" is won by WAY OUT by yama. The reality is that it has been proven that having good openings can also lead to great endings.

Esta es probablemente la canción más diferencial entre las tres presentadas acá básicamente porque se sale un poco del canon de lo que debería de ser un ending. Lucky Kilimanjaro son un grupo japones de musica electropop, de ahí el sonido tan particular que tiene. Ellos se caracterizan por tener temas bailables y sonidos que recuerdan al pop. A pesar de esto la canción no deja de ser sumamente emocional porque se centra en uno de los protagonistas. Se sabe que uno de los objetivos a la hora de escribir el tema era dar un poco de calma ante tanto juego psicológico que tiene la trama y es que el anime es eso, un juego/thriller en donde lo peor de las personas puede salir a la luz. Su letra es claramente un canto a la positividad de la vida y la posibilidad de tener nuevos comienzos, de ahí la animación del propio anime. Ese contraste entre la trama y este tema es muy top y bien pensado. Si bien es cierto que el opening es una joya y el que más me gustó, no pasa lo mismo con el ending, es bueno si, pero para mi esta "batalla" la gana WAY OUT de yama. La realidad es que se comprueba que por el hecho de tener buenos openings también se puede tener grandes endings.

No soy mucho de escuchar o ver los Endings de los animes que veo, a menos que me fascine tanto o me llame la atención de alguna manera. Estás tres elecciones suenan genial, sobre todo la primera de Nippon Sangoku que es una barbaridad.
