Zen Zen Be Alright

When I was walking downtown, I saw graffiti on someone’s fairly new-looking woodshed. The snow was falling nicely, creating an atmosphere that suited the graffiti well, so I took a photo. I felt sorry for the owner or whoever built the woodshed, but the graffiti itself was actually quite good compared to other graffiti in town.

Some people practice graffiti around here, but there aren’t many good ones. Still, it’s fun to read graffiti because sometimes it’s tough to decode them. This one says "Porker," I guess.

I never became a graffiti artist, but if I were, what kind of artist name would I choose? What kind of messages would I want to put on the wall?

I’d definitely want to stay anonymous, like Banksy, and I would paint pictures for sure. A few years ago, a community organizer contacted me about doing a wall art project. I really wanted to try, but I had to turn down the offer.

I had a solid idea for it, but it was just too tough. The schedule was too tight, there was no financial support, and at that time, I didn’t have a car, so it was impossible to take on the project. If I had been able to participate, I would have painted something with an Oriental style, combining Japanese and Canadian culture with nature.

I wish my circumstances had allowed me to do it, but I wasn’t too disappointed.

The other day, while preparing teaching materials for my students, I decided to focus on listening practice. One of my students is really into Enhypen at the moment. Her vocabulary has improved a lot thanks to their songs.

I didn’t know much about the group until she told me about them. Her favourite song is ’Always.’ When I looked up the lyrics, I found a mix of interesting Japanese and English phrases. That’s why she’s learning so many new words!

As I was writing and editing some lines for the lesson, I realized I was also singing along and memorizing the song. Now, it’s stuck in my head! Studying a language through music is such a great method.

Her motivation is incredibly high because she gets to learn through her favourite artist. I hope she can go to their concert someday. That's one of her dreams.

I also came across this sign in town. There used to be a train track here, but I guess this is just a leftover piece of railway equipment.

Honestly, I’m really disappointed that they removed the train rails and stopped the train service in this area. It must have been such a useful way to get around. If the train were still here, I could go to a big city by myself or even visit the next town, where I could have worked on that wall art project I had to turn down.

Now, there’s a hiking trail where the rails used to be. I wonder if there’s a possibility of bringing back an eco-friendly electric train or a shuttle minibus service. That would be a great solution!

ぜんぜんビーオールライト

先日町の中を歩いていると、わりと新しい木造の物置の壁にグラフィティーが描かれているのを見かけました。サラサラとした雪が降っていて、グラフィティーの雰囲気と合間っていい感じの構図だったので写真を撮りました。もちろん、この物置の持ち主や作った方のことを思うとかわいそうだなと感じるのですが、このグラフィティーは、他のと比べてなかなかいいデザインだなと思いました。

この町ではたまにグラフィティーを見かけますが、どれもあまり上手ではありません。ですから、キレイに描けているのは珍しいと思ったのです。グラフィティーは、なんて描いてあるのかを理解するのはなかなか難しいものもありますので、読みとくのは楽しいです。これは「ポーカー」と描いてあるのでしょうか。

わたしはグラフィティーアーティストになろうと思ったことはありませんが、もしなるとしたらどんなアーティストネームがいいでしょうか。自分だったらどんなメッセージ性を込めて壁に落書きするのでしょう。

もちろん、バンクシーみたいな匿名がいいです。文字だけではなく絵も含みたいです。数年前、地域のイベントオーガナイザーの方から、壁画プロジェクトに参加しませんかと声をかけていただいたことがあります。やってみたかったのですが、色々な理由から断念しました。

もしやるとしたら、アイディアだけはあったのですが…。スケジュールがかなりタイトだったことと、材料費などは自己負担ということと、車を自由に使用できない時期だったことなど、いろいろな理由からプロジェクト参加は諦めました。もし参加できていたら、オリエンタルなスタイルで、日本とカナダを融合したような文化や自然をテーマにした絵を描きたかったです。

残念ではありますが、そこまで落ち込みはしませんでした。

この前、次回のレッスンの準備をしていたところ、聞き取りの練習にちなんだことをしようと考えていました。生徒さんの一人が、最近かなりのエンハイプン推しになりました。それもあってか、彼女の単語力がぐんぐんアップしているのです。

エンハイプンのことを彼女に聞くまであまり知りませんでした。彼女のお気に入りの曲は「Always」だそうです。歌詞を読んでいると、日本語と英語を上手に融合していて、とても面白いフレーズだと思いました。だから、彼女は最近よく日本語を学んでいるのですね。

歌を聴きながらレッスン用の歌詞を書いて編集をしていると、なんだか自然と歌詞を覚えて口ずさんでいる自分がいました。今は歌詞が頭から離れません。言語を学ぶには、やっぱり歌を聴くのがかなり効果的ですね。

好きなアーティストの曲を聴くことで、彼女のモチベーションがかなり上がっている様子です。彼女の夢の一つであるコンサートに行ける日がくるといいなと願っています。

これは町にある看板の写真です。一昔前まで、この町には列車が通っていたので、その名残の列車関係の標識だと思います。

正直言って、この地域に列車がないのはかなりがっかりです。もしもまだ列車があれば、生活がとても便利だと思うのです。一人で自由に大きな街まで出かけることだってできますし、隣町にだって気軽に出かけることができます。壁画プロジェクトだって参加できたかもしれません。

今は列車のレールが撤去されてハイキングロードになっています。エコな電動列車とかミニシャトルバスなどを走らせる可能性もまだあるようにも感じますが。その気配は今のところ一向にありません。
