Monday Drumday. A lovely one

On the Drumeo school they do a monthly collaboration video where students film themselves playing a song. This month is was Lovely Day by Bill Withers.

I was dithering over joining in, but did send in a video at the last minute. On that I played a really simple version using the standard 'money beat', but it has been frustrating me that I could not get closer to the cool syncopated bass drum part. I have been trying to get it into my brain. I even 'air drum' it at work. One advantage of drumming is that you do not actually need an instrument to figure out how to play something.

This is still not the full version and I did slow the backing track down to 90%, but I am getting there. I did a couple of takes today and this was the better one even though I mess up in a few places. I definitely feel like I am making progress.

I have been slacking a bit on the Drumeo lessons lately, but am still playing most days. I have just had other things going on, but I will get back to it soon.

Rock on!

Keep rocking and enjoy the things you love doing @steevc . Personally, I am determined to start taking keyboard lessons this year and I hope to achieve this goal before the year is over

Go for it! There's loads of free lessons for any instrument online, but finding a good teacher helps a lot.

I'm personally waiting to watch your keyboard video on Hive whenever you're ready to share it with us 😁 this year, next year... we'll wait 😁

Online musical lessons can be somewhat engaging to help replace that feeling we lose by not learning physically and directly from a tutor. With this monthly collaboration, I'm sure students will try to bring out their best performance to join other students and have a sense of belonging in a musical platform that is concerned about their growth.

I have been running away from learning Jazz drums 😅 I feel it cages me. Drum is really critical and instrumental to maintaining the pace and tempo of a song...

Honestly, I don't wanna be that guy 🤣🤣🤣 I don't trust myself to keep steady. This is my confession 😅

I'm sure little by little you'll get that perfect synchronisation 👌 and you'll run confidently at a high tempo

Keep going, if its a passion the for sure must feel great when you accomplish a full song without mistakes, I have always think that playing the drums is not easy thing, all the coordination of hands, feet, sight, brain, its amazing

I always used to have trouble with my hands doing one thing and my feet doing something else. I would always find myself matching up and then it would just get all messed up. I am sure with more practice I could have mastered it, but I always found it frustrating.

It's a fundamental part of drumming and something I need to keep working on. I find I have to simplify it and build up. I found it hard to sing whilst playing guitar to start with, but now it's just natural.

yeah, that makes sense. Practice makes perfect I guess!

It's great that you can have these lessons, it's just another way in which the modern world has it's perks (which I have to remind myself sometimes haha) Keep up the good work ! @steevc I loved playing rockband a few years back with my friends as I always 'got' the drums, as no one else wanted them, but it was such fun to increase speed and skill on even just that, so I can imagine this must be pretty rewarding!

I wish we'd had these facilities when I was young. I had to buy guitar magazines to learn songs. Didn't even have a video recorder at the the start. Now I can make videos and share them with the world. You still need to put in the practice time though.

I never played Rock Band, but that could be good for learning drums. I've heard the guitars aren't much like a real one.

I decided I didn't want to regret economising later. I'm happy with it.

Gosh that's quite some drum beat for that song. I have to be honest, I wouldn't even attempt that syncopated bass drum beat. I'd play a straight old fashioned four beat pattern as soon as the intro is finished.

It was a challenge, but I wanted to try and do it. I did another version for the Drumeo collaboration, but that was just the simple one. I'm trying to play most days to train my brain.
