Bossing some jazz with The Moonshots

My jazz band with @daniellemurray on clarient, @purplesinger on keys and Bob (bringer of biscuits) on flute had another practice session at the weekend. As usual we were at London Road Studios, but we got upgraded to their big room. I did not realise it was in a separate building just along from where we usually play.

Big room

The drum kit there is the same as the one I have played before. It is bigger than what I have at home, but it is not hard to adapt to it. I just have to take my snare drum and cymbals along.

We played a load of tunes and I have included some snippets. The video was from my phone and those with just audio are from Bob's Zoom recorder. As I have been working on bossa nova beats we tried those on a few songs. It is hard to keep it up with a song and I struggled a bit. On the last song in the video I just played a simplified version without the foot work.

I also had a little sing on All Of Me. On that I just kept the rhythm going with my feet as I was holding the microphone.

We had a tea/coffee break half way through. The buildings opposite the studio were destroyed by a huge fire a few years ago and they made a dramatic background for some photos. I had a play at making an album cover. Not that we have plans to record one just yet.

Album cover

These sessions are great fun and we should have a little gig next month where we can play to others. We have played together in various formations for a while now, so we know what we are capable of.

Rock on!

Cheers. We play a few songs that mention the moon, so that inspired the name.

Working out in a larger area can truly enhance the experience, and it's nice how effortlessly you're adjusting to various setups.

Cheers. The Latin rhythms are not so easy, but I'll keep on trying. The band is sounding great.

I hadn't realised all those burnt out building were on that plot.
Blimey Steve, that bossa nova rhythm is difficult on the kit isn't it?

The bossa might be easier with several percussionists. I can play it, but struggle to keep up sometimes. That's just one Latin rhythm, so there's much more to learn.
