Desde bien pequeño la navidad ha sido una época bien esperada. Me emocionaba llenar de adornos brillantes el árbol junto a mi familia y colmar la casa de luces. A pesar de no ser una tradición que se tome mucho en cuenta en nuestro país, para nosotros era muy importante no dejar pasar estas fechas por alto y festejar junto a nuestros seres queridos y familiares el fin de otro año.

Since I was little, Christmas has been a long-awaited time. I was excited to fill the tree with my family with shiny decorations and fill the house with lights. Despite not being a tradition that is taken into account in our country, it was very important for us not to let these dates pass by and celebrate the end of another year with our loved ones and family.

Esta vez, será una navidad diferente. Aún me sigo emocionando por las luces como aquel niño y adoro escuchar villancicos, pero armar el árbol de navidad no se siente igual. Nuestro país está en medio de la peor crisis que jamás ha vivido, mi gente no tiene espíritu ni ganas de celebrar. Esta noche tristemente no todos tendrán algo que cenar. Esta noche se quedarán sillas vacías en cada mesa de cada familia cubana que ha sido dividida por quienes se vieron obligados a partir en busca de un futuro mejor. Nos tocará desearle a más de un amigo feliz noche buena por una videollamada, intentando que un abrazo traspase una pantalla. Aceptaré que víctimas de nuestra realidad @dayaperez y @villyceff no podrán estar para el nacimiento de nuestro bebé, y ahora se encuentran al otro lado del mundo.

Espero que esta noche no colapse la conexión y todos podamos comunicarnos con los que están lejos. Espero que no haya otro apagón que dure 98 horas y deje a mi Cuba otra vez totalmente a oscuras. Espero que en medio del caos puedan disfrutar esta canción que aún triste mi alma, fue hecha con una sonrisa en el rostro para aliviar la carga que nos ha impuesto la vida. ¡Feliz Navidad a todos donde quiera que estén!

This time, it will be a different Christmas. I still get excited about the lights like that kid and I love listening to Christmas carols, but putting up the Christmas tree doesn't feel the same. Our country is in the middle of the worst crisis it has ever experienced, my people have no spirit or desire to celebrate. Tonight sadly not everyone will have something to eat for dinner. Tonight there will be empty chairs at every table of every Cuban family that has been divided by those who were forced to leave in search of a better future. We will have to wish more than one friend a happy Christmas Eve over a video call, trying to make a hug go beyond a screen. I will accept that victims of our reality @dayaperez and @villyceff will not be able to be there for the birth of our baby, and now they are on the other side of the world.

I hope that tonight the connection does not collapse and we can all communicate with those who are far away. I hope there is not another blackout that lasts 98 hours and leaves my Cuba completely in the dark again. I hope that in the midst of chaos you can enjoy this song that, even though my soul is sad, was made with a smile on our faces to alleviate the burden that life has imposed on us.
