How I Learned Czech (and English) With Music and Beer 🍻

I didn’t learn English in school—I picked it up from punk rock lyrics and Cartoon Network. Why? Because studying was always boring. And let’s be honest, it only gets harder the closer you get to 40... jeeez.

When I moved to the Czech Republic, I already had a basic understanding of the language—I could catch about 50% of what was being said, and I could order food and beer at a restaurant. But forming full sentences or talking about anything beyond food or drinks? Way out of my league.

Of course, I gave Czech lessons a try. I started with a Czech for English speakers course, which was actually great. Shoutout to Gabriela from Liberec—amazing teacher. Fun fact: turns out she was a štamgast (regular) at the same bar we opened in 2017 with @beertourism. Small world.

Later, I joined a Czech course for Ukrainian immigrants, where I spent two months mostly surrounded by Ukrainian women—many of whom, let's be honest, weren’t that interested in learning. 😅

One day, a teacher gave us a listening exercise. She handed out a paper filled with random Czech words and told us she’d play a Czech pop song—we had to mark the words we heard. She was shocked when I named the band before she even pressed play.

Yeah… I tried to learn Czech the same way I learned English—through music.

In this blog, I’ll share the tracks that helped me on my Czech language journey, and I’d love it if the Czech community could jump in and suggest more songs I should check out!

🇨🇿 Česká verze: Jak jsem se naučil česky (a anglicky) díky hudbě a pivu 🍻

Angličtinu jsem se neučil ve škole. Naučil jsem se ji z punkrockových textů a Cartoon Networku. Proč? Protože učení mě vždycky nudilo. A čím blíž ke čtyřicítce, tím je to těžší… no fakt.

Když jsem se přestěhoval do Česka, měl jsem už nějaký základ—rozuměl jsem zhruba 50 % a zvládl si objednat jídlo a pivo v hospodě. Ale složit větu nebo se bavit o něčem jiném než jídle nebo pití? To bylo úplně mimo můj level.

Samozřejmě jsem zkusil jazykovku. Začal jsem s kurzem češtiny pro anglicky mluvící, a to bylo super. Učitelka Gabriela z Liberce byla fakt skvělá! A ještě větší náhoda – byla štamgastka v tom samém baru, který jsme s @beertourism otevřeli v roce 2017. Svět je malej.

Pak jsem šel na kurz češtiny pro ukrajinské imigranty, kde jsem strávil dva měsíce hlavně mezi ukrajinskými ženami – no a upřímně, některé z nich to vůbec nebraly vážně 😅

Jednou nám učitelka dala poslechové cvičení – na papíru byly náhodné české slova a pustila nám popovou písničku. Měli jsme označit ta slova, která uslyšíme. Byla v šoku, když jsem jí řekl název kapely ještě než to vůbec pustila.

Jo, i češtinu jsem se pokoušel učit přes hudbu. Stejně jako angličtinu.
