#25 History Of Rock Music: DREAM THEATER: DREAM MUSICIANS.
Direct heirs of the great progressive and symphonic bands of the 70's, Dream Theater is one of the most popular groups of the last metal bands. An exquisite combo in execution, masterful in composition, of perfectionist technique to unsuspected limits... It may not be at first sight a band with commercial potential, but it has managed to carve an important niche in the industry. The truth is that bands with their characteristics have always enjoyed good commercial results, but we are talking about decades ago, and that has favored Dream Theater, the only exponents of massive success in a style that was on its way to extinction and was rescued by these New Yorkers.
Herederos directos de las grandes bandas progresivas y sinfónicas de los 70, Dream Theater son uno de los grupos mas populares de las ultimas hornadas metalicas. Un combo exquisito en ejecución, magistral en composición, de técnica perfeccionista hasta limites insospechadas… Quiza no sea a primera vista una banda con potencial comercial, pero ha conseguido hacerse un hueco importante en la industria. Lo cierto es que los grupos de sus características siempre han gozado de un buenos resultados comerciales, pero estamos hablando de décadas atrás, y eso ha favorecido a Dream Theater, únicos exponentes de éxito masivo en un estilo que en vías de extinción fue rescatado por estos neoyorkinos.
Long songs and long progressions do not seem to be favorable conditions to reign in the charts, but luckily the Theater have demonstrated their quality, a mastery that oozes from all their joints, and they have a huge legion of fans behind them, who are raving about their albums all over the planet. As much in the USA as in Europe and especially in Japan, the band has a reputation and a very important circulation. Although they debuted in 89 with “When Dream And Day Unite”, it was not until 92, with that marvel called “Images And Words” when they became known, and in what a way.
Extensas canciones y progresiones de alto minutaje no parecen condiciones favorables para reinar en los charts, pero por suerte los Theater han demostrado su calidad, una maestria que rezuma por todos sus porros, y llevan a sus espaldas a una numerosísima legion de fans que arramblan con sus redondos en todos lados del planeta. Tanto en los USA como en Europa y muy especialmente en Japon, la banda tiene una reputación y una tirada importantísima. Aunque debutaron en el 89 con “When Dream And Day Unite”, no fue hasta el 92, con esa maravilla llamada “Images And Words” cuando se dieron a conocer, y de que manera.
Counting already in their ranks with a splendid vocalist named James LaBrie, and with a line-up of exceptional instrumentalists formed by John Petrucci, John Myung, Mike Portnoy and Kevin Moore, they managed to turn one of their songs, “Pull Me Under”, into a metal hit. The rock world was stunned with such ability, and turned to them, turning them into absolute stars. They didn't even fit in the music scene of the United States at that time, in full hard rock decadence and grunge boom, but that was the least of it. With a sound foundation based on metal and following the patterns set by Yes, Pink Floyd and mainly Rush (of whom they are considered to be outstanding students), they made a name for themselves that by now is already considered a rock great.
Contando ya en sus filas con un esplendido vocalista llamado James LaBrie, y con una formación de instrumentistas de excepción formada por John Petrucci, John Myung, Mike Portnoy y Kevin Moore, consiguieron convertir uno de sus temas, “Pull Me Under”, en todo un hit metalico. El mundo del rock quedo anonadado con tamaña habilidad, y se volcó con ellos, convirtiéndolos en absolutas estrellas. No encajaban ni a patadas en la escena musical de los States de la época, en plena decadencia hard rockera y auge grunge, pero eso era lo de menos. Con cimiento sonoro basado en el metal y siguiendo los esquemas fijados por Yes, Pink Floyd y principalmente Rush (de los que se les considera aventajados alumnos) se hicieron con un nombre que a estas alturas ya es considerado el de un grande del rock.
Despite the complexity and the magnanimous character of their works, they are not one of those bands that let a considerable number of years pass between their albums, which at first sight would be the “logical” thing to do. They publish with assiduity meterial, something that honors them and helps them to continue in the breach and not to be forgotten (something on the other hand quite difficult due to its impact in the fans) in a panorama that continuously looks for new values discarding the previous ones. “Awake” was their next release, following the same parameters of uninhibited and overflowing musical imagination, apparently touched by some King Midas of rock that turns them into jewels of the metal crown.
Pese a la complejidad y el magnánimo carácter de sus obras, no son uno de esos grupos que dejan pasar un considerable numero de años entre sus discos, que seria a primera vista lo “lógico”. Publican con asiduidad meterial, algo que les honra y les ayuda a seguir en la brecha y no ser olvidados (cosa por otra parte bastante difícil debido a su impacto en los fans) en un panorama que continuamente busca nuevos valores desechando lo anterior. “Awake” fue su siguiente entrega, siguiendo los mismos parámetros de deshinibida y desbordante imaginación musical, aparentemente tocados por algún Rey Midas del rock que los convierte en joyas de la corona metalica.
The EP “A Change Of Seasons” was an interlude until “Falling Into Infinity”, on whose tour their second live plastic would be recorded (after “Live At The Marquee” in 93). The Theater have always stood out live as true magicians and almost never repeat repertoire and never fail to surprise with jams and other sonorous deities. Their live albums are never repetitive or tiresome (except for some) and their fans receive them with open arms knowing that there is contained the very special touch that the band gives to their songs on stage.
El EP “A Change Of Seasons” fue un interludio hasta “Falling Into Infinity”, en cuya gira se registraria su Segundo plastic en vivo (tras el “Live At The Marquee” del 93). Los Theater siempre se han destapado en directo como verdaderos magos y casi nunca repiten repertorio y mucho manos dejan alguna vez de sorprender con jams y demás deidades sonoras. Sus álbumes en vivo no son en ningún momento repetitivos ni cargantes (salvo para algunos) y sus fans los reciben con los brazos abiertos sabiendo que allí esta contenido el especialísimo toque que imprime el grupo sobre las tablas a sus canciones.
In the most recent past we could only enjoy one studio work, the epic rock opera “Scenes From A Memory” from '99, but in return they gave us a double and a triple live album that have confirmed their fame all over the planet as pure and hard live essence. Finally this year appeared the absolutely overwhelming “Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence”, double album that gives them the category of heavy legend and continues to provide them with the enviable sales that they have been reaping throughout their career against all odds. Truly indescribable, pure emotion.
En el pasado mas reciente solo pudimos disfrutar de una obra de estudio, la epica opera rock “Scenes From A Memory” del 99, pero a cambio nos regalaron un doble y un triple en directo que han confirmado su fama en todo el planeta como esencia pura y dura en vivo. Finalmente este año apareció el absolutamente sobrecogedor “Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence”, doble álbum que les da categoría de leyenda del heavy y les siguen proporcionando las envidiables ventas que han venido cosechando durante toda su carrera contra todo pronostico. Verdaderamente indescriptibles, emoción en estado puro.
Tremenda banda, justamente hoy vi el estado de un amigo y estaba viendo a la banda en vivo y en directo, todo emocionado. Gracias por compartir 🤗 es bueno que las nuevas generaciones se sigan escuchando.
