A very special milestone for the MobeyDick band - the roadie husband's perspective.
Today was an amazing milestone. My partner, my love - Claire Mobey (@clairemobey) was live on the radio!
Together with her band partner @jasperdick, they are Mobey Dick!
They have come such a long way and I am so proud of you my love!
Soon enough, the recording of the radio interview shall be available on Zone Radio's podcasts and you can listen to it again and again. But let me tell you about the journey that brought this band from long lost friends corresponding occasionally on Facebook to where they are now!
I had known Claire something like 8 days, therefore on the 8th of January 2020, she sent me a recording of Embalm, now known as One more Time. It clicked in my head that THIS was who Claire was!
This was her soul. She was a musician.
By heartache and misfortune she has stopped all music ventures for 20 years. Then we met and I just held her and loved her. Soon enough there was lots of singing near the fire on weekends. Soon enough she began thinking about all those old songs in her songfile that had not been completed.
And then she made contact with Jasper!
The two of them had been friends in pre-school and they had played in the sand-pit together.
So they made a plan to meet after hard Covid Lockdown. New songs came into being. You can look on their profiles for these songs. This story is not about the songs, but about the musicians.
New songs were created and other songs were dusted off and completed.
Some time after that was the first open-mic event. The two of them performed on stage in Muzenberg. Some time after that it was Barley Corn and Cottage club and Salt & Sage.
Soon enough they had gone for all sorts of gigs, more and more their lineup that had been mostly covers began to evolve and now covers are a rarity in their lineup.
Shows that they had seat booked for were sold out and they even managed to perform and sell out at the Alma Caffe!
And then they got to do their radio interview and tell their story. They also performed two songs live and on the air. The response from callers were phenominal and Claire had a great time!
Finally Claire and Jasper got to add their signatures to the large canvasses that decorated the hallway of the little radio station.
Like I said. I am so happy and proud of Claire for pushing so far and keeping at it!

I am proud of all her accomplishments in music. This is where her soul is and thus I have actively sought to support her and encourage her to go for it. With that, she has just shone and grown. It makes me happy to see her so happy!

Hey @ma3stro ! I don't play piano myself but my understanding is:
The white keys are C D E F G A B C (ie. no sharps - those are the black keys). So if you only play the white keys you are basically doing the Do(C/1)-Re(D/2)-Mi(E/3) scale in the key of C-major.
What is even more cool is that the basic chords that make up that key, are spaced out in the same pattern :
Cmaj = C + E + G = Keys 1 + 3 + 5 (so you just make sure you skip a white key between each of your three fingers)
Dmin = D + F + A = Keys 2 + 4 +6 (so just shift all three fingers one position to the right)
Emin = E + G + B = Keys 3 + 5 + 7 (shift to the right again)
Fmaj = F + A + C = Keys 4 + 6 + 1 (shift right again)
Gmaj = G + B + D = Keys 5 + 7 + 2 (again...)
Amin = A + C + E = Keys 6 + 1 + 3 (again...)
Bdim = B + D + F = Keys 7 + 2 + 4 (unlikely to use this one often)
With this, you can plonk out the basics of many pop songs. Try do the basic chord shape with left hand on the lower-sounding side, and improvising with the higher sounding white keys with your right hand!
You are so dope! Thanks for sharing this with me mate. Just saved your reply for future reference. I so wanted to learn and even had a piano teacher for all of a couple of lessons. Had to say farewell to the lovely lady a long time back, though - due to financial constraints.
I've seen that there are some free "lessons" which I could serve as a starting point from YouTube vids as well. One of these day, I may just have to surprize myself. The fact that you took the type to share all this with me is serving as some sort of new found motivation. #legend!
