Let's Take A Look At Akira

My second entry for the monthly contest is Akira, a beauty of an Anime that I luckily had the chance to grow up with.
The story is set in Tokyo, Japan in the year 2019. Back in 1988 an explosion in Tokyo caused by the psychic powers of a young boy does a lot of damage to the city, which leads to World War 3.

2019 and Tokyo is partly restored and is now known as Neo Tokyo. The city is ravaged by gang violence and acts of terrorism that is targeting the current Tokyo government.

Year of release: 1988
Aired: July 16 1988
Studio: Tokyo Movie Shinsha
Genre: Action, Horror, Supernatural, sci-fi.
Age rating: R+
My rating: 13/10

Shoutarou Kaneda leads a motorcycle gang known as The Capsules, a group riding souped up custom motorbikes that have the long running battle with their rival motorbike gang known as The Clowns.

While fighting The Clowns, Tetsuo Shima who is a member of The Capsules, gets into an accident and ends up meeting an esper who has managed to escape from the government confinement.
This lead to Tetsuo being quarantined himself, with the aim that he doesn't unleash his new powers on the rest of Neo Tokyo.

Some of the scenes are quite graphic and aggressive, which really suits the style of the 80's style anime's.
I bloody love it!

This is one Anime that I really recommend as it is bloody amazing.
It is definitely not suitable for young kids, which I was young when I watched it the first time. I was creeped the F out and I'm sure it's affected me later in life!

Akira is one of those films that has been widely praised throughout the years and won a ton of awards. It is a scary film in places as the amount of violence in a small city is quite scary to even think about. The chances of this happening is quite high, especially in the current state the UK finds themselves in.

Without a doubt, this movie is one of my favorites (if not my favorite) of the science fiction genre. The quality of animation and visual effects combined with the excellent sound effects and the incredible soundtrack that this work has makes it an excellent option for any fan. Akira completely changed the way animated films of this type were made at the time and is still highly appreciated today as one of the best works in existence.

Good review.
