Introduction

One of the bands that marked a milestone in Venezuelan rock is Malanga. My connection with them goes back way before their first album came out, since the band's bassist is my nephew, and my name was actually on the list of potential producers for "Ta’ trancao," the group's debut record.

Although they have explored different musical trends over the years, that first album was their most "Latin" effort—a blend of rock-pop-latin that launched them to the top of the hit charts, took them to countless concerts, and opened the doors for international touring outside Venezuela.

I must confess that the band's style during that first stage was my personal favorite. However, it’s also fair to recognize that in their subsequent albums, there is clear growth as musicians and an evident maturity as a band.

So, for my return to this #TTT hosted by our friend @ablaze, I bring you three of my favorite songs by Malanga.

1. Vueltas

This song is the most evident example of the fusion they achieved with Latin sounds. It's where Caribbean rhythm elements stand out the most, even featuring an accordion sound that occasionally places it in a sort of cumbia vibe.

This music video strikes me as one of the band's most original and, above all, very entertaining, showing in part the irreverence of the group's members.

2. Latin Lover

This song portrays a well-known Latin American stereotype: the latin lover of questionable reputation. For this track, they had a special guest appearance by Rubén Blades, who delivers a narration referencing Pedro Navaja, the character from his iconic song, who is also a latin lover.

3. De Caracas a Madrid

Without a doubt, the track with the greatest reach has been De Caracas a Madrid, from the album Tren de Vuelta, one of their most rock-oriented records in the classic sense. They recorded this album in Spain in 2002, where the group became one of the most successful acts.

I hope you enjoyed this selection of Venezuelan rock fusion! What's your favorite stage or song by Malanga? See you in the comments!
