The Billo's Caracas Boys Orchestra has earned the title of "The Most Popular of Venezuela" for what has been its career during 78 years of existence, since August 31, 1940, date of its foundation. However, their successes have transcended all borders.

Background

All this history has its beginning in the 20s of the last century, with the emergence of the Big Bands. This orchestral format that arose to interpret jazz, had a very large impact everywhere and soon expanded to other countries. Although in the countries of the Caribbean they were used too to play jazz, soon the orchestras appeared, with the same format, but to play the local music. That is the case of the orchestra Casino de la Playa, a Cuban orchestra that started recording son and guaracha with this type of group.

In Venezuela

Apart from the success of orchestras like Glenn Miller or Beny Goodman, Cuban orchestras soon became the preferred ones. Of course, Venezuelan orchestras with these same characteristics began to appear very soon. Among them, those of Luis Alfonso Larrain, Chucho Sanoja and Luis María Frómeta stood out.

Billo Frómeta

Luis María Frómeta Pereira, better known as "Billo" Frómeta, was a Dominican musician who came to Venezuela in 1937 as director of the Santo Domingo Jazz Band, but the owner of the place where they were going to play decided to change the name of the orchestra to Billo's Happy Boys. That change brought problems to the young Dominican musician and members of the orchestra with the government and the people of his native country, because there was no mention of the capital of the island, so the musicians of this group were extending their stay in Venezuela.

Billo Frómeta quickly knew how to conquer the hearts of Venezuelans with their musical arrangements and compositions, in an increasingly personal, unique, original, danceable and professional style.

A couple of years later came out of his hand the Billo's Caracas Boys orchestra, which has recorded more than 100 albums throughout its history.

This orchestra has several important records: its duration as a dance orchestra, the number of recorded albums and the most attended dance party in history, which is in the Guinness Book of Records, at the Carnivals of the Canary Islands in 1987 together with Celia Cruz.

The rhythms of the orchestra

Billo's Caracas Boys achieved a very particular sound when performing pasodobles, Dominican and Venezuelan merengues, porros, cumbias and boleros. Their "Mosaics" were very well known, this are medleys of songs of different rhythms intertwined in a very original way.

Although the orchestra plays Latin music, it does so with a very simple rhythmic base, without highlighting the usual polyrhythm. For this reason, it's sometimes incorrectly called "Galician music", in reference to the rhythmic simplicity of Galicia's music.

On May 5, 1988, today 30 years ago, Billo Frómeta passed away, but his orchestra continues.

Antecedentes

Toda esta historia tiene su inicio en los años 20 del siglo pasado, con el surgimiento de las Big Bands. Este formato de orquesta que surgió para interpretar el jazz, tuvo un impacto muy grande en todas partes y pronto se expandió a otros países. Aunque en los países del Caribe también se usaban para tocar jazz, pronto aparecieron las orquestas, con el mismo formato, pero que interpretaban la música local. Ese es el caso de la orquesta Casino de la Playa, orquesta cubana que empezó a grabar sones y guarachas con este tipo de agrupación.

En Venezuela

Aparte del éxito que tenían orquestas como las de Glenn Miller o Beny Goodman, las orquestas cubanas se convirtieron muy pronto en las preferidas. Por supuesto empezaron rápidamente a aparecer orquestas venezolanas con estas mismas características. Entre ellas destacaron las de Luis Alfonso Larrain, Chucho Sanoja y la de Luis María Frómeta.

Billo Frómeta

Luis María Frómeta Pereira, mejor conocido como “Billo” Frómeta, era un músico dominicano que vino a Venezuela en 1937 como director de la Santo Domingo Jazz Band, pero el dueño del local decidió cambiarle el nombre a la orquesta por el de Billo’s Happy Boys. Ese cambió le trajo problemas al joven músico dominicano e integrantes de la orquesta con el gobierno y la gente de su país natal, pues allí no se mencionaba a la capital de la isla, por lo cual los músicos de esta agrupación fueron alargando su estadía en Venezuela.

Rápidamente Billo Frómeta supo conquistar el corazón de los venezolanos con sus arreglos musicales y sus composiciones, en un estilo cada vez más personal, único, original, bailable y profesional.

Un par de años más tarde surge de su mano la orquesta Billo’s Caracas Boys, la cual ha grabado más de 100 discos a lo largo de su historia.

Esta orquesta tiene varios récords importantes, su duración como orquesta de baile, la cantidad de discos grabados y el baile de mayor asistencia en la historia, el cual está en el Libro Guiness de los Récords, en los Carnavales de las Islas Canarias en 1987 junto a Celia Cruz.

Los ritmos de la orquesta

La Billo’s Caracas Boys logró un sonido muy particular al interpretar pasodobles, merengues dominicanos y venezolanos, porros, cumbias y boleros. Fueron muy conocidos los “Mosaicos”, que eran potpurrís de canciones de distintos ritmos entrelazados de manera muy original.

Aunque la orquesta interpreta música latina, lo hace con una base rítmica muy simple, sin resaltar la consabida polirritmia. Por esta razón, de manera incorrecta le suelen llamar "música gallega", en referencia a la simplicidad rítmica de la música de Galicia.

El 5 de mayo de 1988, hoy hace 30 años, falleció Billo Frómeta, pero su orquesta aún sigue vigente.
