In Hive Open Mic #291, we explore the theme: “Harmonious Autumn.” I have the pleasure of sharing my trumpet interpretation of “Autumn In New York,” a jazz song composed by Vernon Duke in Westport, Connecticut in 1934. The piece was first heard in the Broadway musical Thumbs Up and was performed by J. Harold Murray. My favorite versions are those by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Diana Krall. The lyrics describe the city of New York during the autumn season, with its bustling crowds, glowing clouds, and towering skyscrapers. It is a truly inspiring song, carrying a message of new opportunities and a breath of hope. I perform this piece in the key of G Major, and I especially enjoy the sound of its extended chords and cyclical movements with subtle modulations. The tempo is moderate, set in 4/4 time, with a flexible and rubato rhythm.

Tengo el placer de compartir mi interpretación con la trompeta de «Autumn In New York» una canción de género Jazz compuesta por Vernon Duke en Westport, Connecticut en 1934. La primera vez que se escuchó este tema fue en un Musical de Broadway Thumbs Up y fue interpretado por J. Harold Murray. Mis versiones favoritas son las de Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong y Diana Krall. La letra describe a la ciudad de New York en la temporada de otoño, con la multitud en sus calles, sus nubes y rascacielos imponentes. Es una canción muy inspiradora, con un mensaje sobre las nuevas oportunidades y un aire de esperanza. Esta pieza musical la interpreto en la tonalidad de G Mayor, y me gusta mucho como suenan los acordes extendidos, y sus movimientos cíclicos con modulaciones sutiles. El tempo es moderado con una cifra indicadora de compas de 4/4 y con un ritmo flexible y rubato.
Music and colors are closely related. Let us think for a moment about the elements of sound, such as intensity, pitch, and timbre. Just like music, colors have different tones; simply adding white, black, or transparency can change their appearance. Some melodies can feel dark, while others shine with lighter colors. Perception is relative, what may be good for some can be seen differently by others. I love the warmth of autumn, with its golden, ochre, red, and brown hues. When we observe these colors, we can feel nostalgia, hope, and appreciate the beauty of the ephemeral. Major tonalities with melancholic nuances convey the same experience. All it takes is to close our eyes and perceive those “sound colors.” The same happens with different musical instruments, each carrying its own color. The dynamics of rhythm and expression also connect us to a chromatic palette. I hope you enjoy the colors of this beautiful interpretation.

La música y los colores están estrechamente relacionados. Solo pensemos por un momento en los elementos del sonido como por ejemplo la intensidad, la altura, y el timbre. Al igual que la música, los colores tienen diferentes tonos, solo basta agregar blanco, negro o una trasparencia para cambiar su apariencia. Algunas melodías pueden ser oscuras, o con colores claros. La percepción es relativa. Lo que puede ser bueno para unos, puede ser visto por otros con otra perspectiva. Me encanta la calidez del otoño, sus colores dorados, ocres, rojos y marrones. Cuando observamos estos colores podemos sentir nostalgia, esperanza y apreciar belleza de lo efímero. Las tonalidades mayores con matices melancólicos transmiten la misma experiencia. Solo basta cerrar los ojos, y apreciar esos colores sonoros. Igual sucede con los diferentes instrumentos musicales, cada uno tiene un color diferente. Las dinámicas del ritmo y expresión también nos conectan con una paleta cromática. Espero disfruten los colores de esta bella interpretación.
