Hoy quiero compartir una canción con la trompeta que llegue a tocar incontables veces, esta se llama «A Time For Us», y es un tema de amor de la película Romeo y Julieta protagonizada por Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey. La canción orgiginal es de Nino Rota, existe una versión instrumental por Henry Mancini. Recuerdo que tuvimos una primera presentación y nos tocaba interpretar esta canción. Los trompetistas estábamos acostumbrados a realizar entradas en una parte central de la pieza, pero ocurrió que dependíamos de que los trombones hicieran una parte de la melodía, la cual indicaba que ya nos tocaba a nosotros. Es lo que llamamos tocar recostado de otro, en vez de contar los compases de espera mentalmente o con la mano, dependíamos de lo que otros hicieran. Increíblemente en plena presentación, los trombones no tocaron, y nosotros tampoco. La pieza terminó en solo acompañamiento. Imagínense la pena, y la cara del director. Esto realmente fue una gran enseñanza sobre ser la importancia de llegar a ser autosuficientes y ser nuestros propios agentes.

Today I want to share a song with the trumpet that I get to play countless times, this is called “A Time For Us”, and it is a love theme from the movie Romeo and Juliet starring Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey. The original song is by Nino Rota, there is an instrumental version by Henry Mancini. I remember we had a first presentation and had to interpret this instrumental song. We trumpeters were used to making entrances in a central part of the piece, but we depended on the trombones to do a part of the melody, which indicated that it was our turn. It is what we call playing leaning on another, instead of counting the bars mentally or by hand, we depended on what others did. Incredibly, in the middle of the presentation, the trombones didn't play, and neither did we. The piece ended with solo accompaniment. Imagine the penalty and the director's face. This was a great teaching on the importance of becoming self-sufficient and being our agents.

Ser autosuficiente musicalmente significa ser capaz de interpretar una pieza sin depender de los demás. Se requiere un nivel de compromiso para tocar en una orquesta musical, tu profesionalismo, y trabajo arduo contribuyen en el éxito del grupo. Cuando uno hace un esfuerzo real por prepararse, y dar todo de sí mismo, eso crea sinergia en una agrupación musical. La pasión y el entusiasmo se contagia. Cuando dependemos de otros, es como si recogiéramos la arena de la playa, y la lanzáramos de nuevo al mar. No existe un crecimiento real y eso retrasa nuestro progreso. Esa experiencia con esa canción me ayudó a entender mi compromiso con el grupo y con mi crecimiento como músico. Debo estudiar la pieza, y hacer lo que me corresponde. Claro, eso no significa que nos desentendamos de lo que está ocurriendo en la Orquesta. Debemos tener los oídos abiertos, estar dispuestos a dar de nosotros mismos y aportar cuando la agrupación lo necesite.

Being musically self-sufficient means being able to perform a piece without depending on others. A level of commitment is required to play in a musical orchestra, your professionalism and hard work contribute to the success of the group. When you make a real effort to prepare and give your all, that creates synergy in a musical group. The passion and enthusiasm are contagious. When we depend on others, it is as if we were picking up the sand from the beach and throwing it back into the sea. There is no real growth and that slows down our progress. That experience with that song helped me understand my commitment to the group and my growth as a musician. I must study the piece, and do what corresponds to me. Of course, that does not mean that we ignore what is happening in the Orchestra. We must have open ears, be willing to give of ourselves, and contribute when the group needs it.
