The music that made an impact on me was the music of Reflection, a group that was active in the mid-90s. At the time, I was listening to a lot of techno, house, and club music, and I heard the "Lollop Sampler," a label compilation released in 1995 on LOLLOP, a label run by Nobukazu Takemura. I thought it was really cool.

Then I heard that Reflection had released their first album "The Errornormous World" in 1996, and I immediately bought the CD and listened to it. I bought the CD and listened to it immediately. The jewel-like shining sound that pierced through each song. Overwhelming breakbeats. It was music I had never heard before. The song "A Journey Around The Unnamed Border" was particularly powerful and astonishing.

In terms of genres, it is said to be in the listening techno or abstract genre, but that doesn't matter to me. Anyway, their music was the most heartbreaking experience I have ever had with music.

After a few more albums and remixes, Reflection went into a long silence and released "music bizarreness" in 2007. There is an interview online about Reflection at this time, many years after their first album, and it shows the anguish that followed the creation of the album.

Although "music bizarreness" was released after a long period of time, I felt a slight change in style, but it was still music that surprised me and took me into a world of the unknown.

Reflection is a unit of Japanese brothers who have certainly made their mark with their music, touring live in Europe and releasing records on European labels. Unfortunately, the older brother, Ichiro Taniguchi, has passed away for an unknown number of years. I don't know the cause. But I do know that they left behind some great music for me. I would like to keep listening to Reflection's music forever.

私にとって衝撃を受けた音楽は、Reflection という90年代半ば頃に活躍したグループの音楽だ。当時私はテクノ、ハウスなとまクラブ系の音楽を聴きあさっていて、その中で”Lollop Sampler”という、竹村延和氏の主宰のレーベルLOLLOPから、1995年にリリースされたレーベル・コンピレーションを聴いて、すごくかっこいいと思ったのだ。

そしてその中からReflection が1996年にファーストアルバム”The Errornormous World”を出したというので速攻でCDを買って聴いた。それが物凄く衝撃だったのだ。各曲から突き刺さる宝石のように輝く音。圧倒的なブレイクビーツ。それは今までに聴いたことがない音楽だった。なかでも”A Journey Around The Unnamed Border “という曲は圧倒的な迫力で度肝を抜かれた。

ジャンルでいえば、リスニング・テクノとかアブストラクトあたりのジャンルらしいがそれは私にとってはどうでもよい。とにかく音楽でこんなに胸を打たれた経験を一番したのが彼らの音楽である。

Reflection はその後いくつかのアルバムやリミックスを出した後、長い沈黙に入り、2007年に”music bizarreness”をリリースした。ファーストアルバムから長い年月が流れたこの時のReflection についてはネット上にインタビューが残っており、制作につきまとった苦悩のようなものが見てとれる。

長い時を経て出された”music bizarreness”は、若干作風の変化を感じるものの、やはり私を驚かせ、未知の世界に入り込ませる音楽だった。

Reflectionは日本人の兄弟ユニットで、ヨーロッパでのライブツアーやヨーロッパのレーベルからレコードを出すなど、音楽で確実に足跡を残した。ただ残念なことは兄の谷口一郎が、何年か不詳だが亡くなってしまったことだ。原因もわからない。ただ彼らは私にとって素晴らしい音楽を残してくれたことは確かだ。私はいつまでも、Reflection の音楽を聴いていたいと思う。
