Three Tune Tuesday - Birthday girl! #3 - A aniversariante do dia! #3 [En-Pt]

Good afternoon to all music lovers!

For this week's TTT challenge, I've decided to continue what I've been doing for the previous two. I searched online for the birthdays of people connected to the world of music. And almost at the end of the list, I found a singer who is not very well known, and who inspired me to choose three songs from her most recognized musical project.

Michelle Phillips, the American actress, singer and songwriter, born on June 4, 1944, was part of the famous musical quartet “The Mamas & The Papas”. This folk rock-inspired vocal quartet, which recorded and performed extensively between 1965 and 1968, eventually gained status as a counter-culture group in the 60s. Their style aimed to adapt folk music to the new rock current and the new sound of the time.

Many stories were written at the time, and many more have been written since... A band that seemed to have harmony and good humor as the motto of their existence, it was later learned that this was not the case... But since this post of mine isn't about gossip, or about the social life and police cases and sex scandals involving musicians, and only the content they generated or performed, here's a choice of three songs from this emblematic musical group of the late 60s, in the transition to the 70s!

I'm now going to talk about my three choices. The first one, I think there's a consensus regarding the immediate connection to the group... A song whose lyrics don't seem to be associated with joy is taken by the quartet to be perceived by everyone as something much more joyful than the lyrics initially convey. A dream lived in a different reality... The fallen leaves on a winter's day, and the dream of being somewhere warm and comfortable. Well, could something be linked to the abuse and consumption of psychotropic substances? Just a suggestion!

The second choice, “Dream a Little Dream of Me” not only has to do with the band, but also with today's birthday girl. The song, written in 1931 and recorded for the first time in February of that same year by Ozzie Nelson, only came to prominence after more than sixty recordings by other bands and other versions created, when one of these versions, precisely the one recorded in 1968 and sung by Cass Elliot with “The Mamas & The Papas”, was imprinted in the memory of many. And you ask, but what's the connection and why did I choose it from so many other songs? Well, Michelle Phillips' father was a friend of the song's co-composer, Fabian Andre, and they had met when Michelle's family lived in Mexico City, when she was still a young girl. Interesting, the turns the song has taken, don't you think?

And what about the third song? It's a lyric that honestly has nothing new to it, except that it takes up a theme that many people are aware of... Monday morning “depression”! But here it's taken to the extreme, and it only seems happier because of the imposition of the voices and their harmony... Anyway, different times... And certainly worth revisiting. A lot was done, said and happened in those crazy years that preceded or drove Flower Power!

Para o desafio do TTT desta semana, decidi dar continuidade ao que tenho vindo a fazer nas duas anteriores. Pesquisei online as datas de aniversário do dia de hoje das pessoas ligadas ao mundo da música. E quase no fim da lista, lá encontrei uma cantora minimamente conhecida, e sobre a qual me inspirou a escolher três canções do seu projecto musical mais reconhecido.

De seu nome Michelle Phillips, a actriz, cantora e compositora americana, nascida no dia de 4 de Junho de 1944, integrou um famoso quarteto musical "The Mamas & The Papas". Este quarteto de inspiração folk rock vocal que gravou e actuou profusamente entre 1965 e 1968, acabou por ganhar um estatuto de grupo de contracultura na década de 60. Seu estilo visava em adaptar a música folk à nova corrente rock e a nova sonoridade da altura.

Muitas histórias se escreveram na altura, e muitas mais foram escritas posteriormente... Uma banda que parecia ter a harmonia e a boa disposição como mote da sua existência, soube-se posteriormente que assim não o era... Mas como esta minha publicação não é sobre mexericos, ou sobre a vida social e os casos de polícia e escândalos sexuais que envolveram músicos, e apenas os conteúdos que geraram ou que interpretaram, deixo aqui uma escolha de três músicas desde emblemático grupo musical do fim da década de 60, na transição para a 70!

E vou agora falar um pouco das minhas três escolhas. A primeira, julgo que é consensual no que diz respeito à imediata ligação ao grupo... Uma canção, que a letra até parece não estar muito associada a alegria, é levada pelo quarteto a que seja percepcionada por todos como algo bem mais alegre do que a letra inicialmente nos transmite. Um sonho vivido numa realidade diferente... As folhas caídas num dia dia de Inverno, e o sonho de estar num local quente e confortável. Bem, algo estaria ligado ao abuso e consumo de substâncias psicotrópicas? Só uma sugestão!

A segunda escolha, "Dream a Little Dream of Me" não tem somente a ver com a banda, mas também com a aniversariante de hoje. A canção escrita em 1931 e gravada pela primeira vez em Fevereiro de esse mesmo ano por Ozzie Nelson, somente após mais de sessenta gravações por outras bandas e outras versões criadas, veio obter um destaque marcado quando uma dessas versões, justamente a que foi gravada em 1968, e cantada por Cass Elliot com os "The Mamas & The Papas", ficou marcada na memória de muitos. E perguntam vocês, mas qual é a ligação e porque é que eu a escolhi, por entre tantas outras canções? Pois bem, o pai de Michelle Phillips era amigo do co-compositor da música, Fabian Andre, e tinham-se conhecido aquando a família de Michelle residia na Cidade do México, quando ela era ainda uma jovem rapariga. Interessante, as voltas que a música deu, não acham?

E o que o dizer da terceira canção? Uma letra que sinceramente não tem nada de novo, senão pegar numa temática que a muitos diz... a "depressão" de segunda de manhã! Mas aqui é levada ao extremo, e só parece mais alegre pela imposição das vozes e da harmonia delas... Enfim, tempos diferentes... E seguramente que vale a pena revisitar. Muito se fez, se disse e aconteceu nesses loucos anos que antecederam ou que impulsionaram o "Flower Power"!
