Three Tune Tuesday - Birthday boy! #2 - O aniversariante do dia! #2/ [En-Pt]

Welcome to my #TTT #ThreeTuneTuesday entry!

Good afternoon to all music lovers!

As I did in the last edition of TTT, I went to research who was having a birthday today, May 28th... And lo and behold, one of the names that came up reminded me of the 90s... Roland Gift!

And who is he, many of you born after 1990 might ask. Well, he was the lead singer of an English pop rock band formed in Birmingham in '84... And that group not only released one “one hit wonder”, but many... The more experienced members of this community (i.e. those born before 1980, like me) can't help but remember good afternoons listening to these hits on the radio, or even on the morning shows that played the list of the best-selling albums of the week.

But surely, in 1989, the album “The raw and the cooked” achieved extraordinary sales in several countries, such as the UK, US, Australia and Canada, with at least two unforgettable songs: “She drives me crazy”, and “Good thing”.

Their always upbeat spirit and rhythms above 80 bpm delighted young people who were trying to live life in a more relaxed way, and not stuck with the artists who had preceded them.... Of course, by this time, there were other famous bands competing in the sales charts, such as Madonna, Kate Bush, New Order and the timeless The Cure!!!

Their drive to produce songs of great quality and engineering, despite their apparent simplicity, always blows us away.

A great example of this is the song “Good thing”, do you know of any other song that manages it so well? I can think of one, yes.... “Walking on Sunshine” by the English band Katrina and the Waves is an excellent example of this.

And to close on a high note, what more could you ask for from what is, for me, the group's best and most iconic song? The vocal range of today's birthday boy is taken to a level that wasn't very common to hear, or maybe it wasn't that uncommon, now that I think Michael Jackson himself had an even better voice... True, but Roland's timbre and accent were captivating and almost intoxicating... He made everyone want to join in and join the party. Do you feel like celebrating life? If so, take the opportunity to listen to other songs by this emblematic band, which I understand is still active today...

We're approaching summer, and here in Portugal, this is the best time of year to go to open-air concerts. I've already bought a pass for the 3 days of Nos Alive (a musical event well known to the Portuguese, and even to many Spaniards and Brits, who, due to their physical proximity and relatively cheap flights, take the opportunity to see a huge range of bands in a single space, with at least 3 stages and a day full of performances!

Mas seguramente, que em 1989, o álbum "The raw and the cooked", atingiu vendas extraordinárias em vários países, como UK, US, Australia e o Canadá, com pelo menos duas canções inesquecíveis: "She drives me crazy", and "Good thing".

Roland has an amazing talent and yeah, Good Thing has such an uplifting vibe to it! I also really love their first single Johnny Come Home and the cover version of Ever Fallen In Love. Roland is totally awesome.

Thank you so much for your comment. It is indeed music that stands to the test of time! But, I think it might be a generational "thing"... Our "parents" probably thought the same about "their music" too... It is amazing, that in the XXI century, we can revisit so quickly one song that we thought... Or even that we don't know pretty well the song name, YouTube or Google would suggest it... Still remember the "old" Modem "times"... were we have to occupy the phone line to have access to the "interwebs"
